Yesssssss. Dude I really hope they win it And they get Marseille next. Very cool. They’ll have to beat 2 of 3 prominent English, Italian, or French sides. Please be aware that out of all those four teams Feyenoord has the best European history with most European cups won. We are not doing so great in Europe the last few decades but we are no small club by any means. 1970 European Champions Cup (current Champions League) 1974 UEFA Cup (current Europa League) 2002 UEFA Cup If Feyenoord wins the Conference League this year we will be the only club in Europe to habe won all three current European cups. I did think it was interesting to learn that you had indeed won the pre champions league league. When it was truly just the league champions right?

I did think it was interesting to learn that you had indeed won the pre champions league league. When it was truly just the league champions right? Yes. It was a different time back then but we are a former Champion of Europe. I might add we also managed to win the former Club World Cup that year. The early 1970's was the golden age of Dutch Football. Feyenoord vs Ajax was what Real Madrid vs Barcelona is today. The biggest match on the planet. It all came together at the 1974 World Cup where The Netherlands reached its first of three World Cup finals. We lost the game but we changed football forever. That team is still considered one of the greatest teams in history. Total Football is the foundation of todays modern game. Clubs like Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Man City and Liverpool still play football based on that legacy. Its fifty years ago today when Holland showed the world how to play.

For those interested...PSV won the cupfinal 2-1 against Ajax. Remind me, does that give Feyenoord an opening to Europa League next year if they finish 3rd? Yes but that was always the case since Ajax and PSV are finishing 1st and 2nd in the league. Ok time to explain properly. There are three European Competitions organised by UEFA. Ranked in importance its 1. Champions League 2. Europa League 3. Conference League How can teams qualify? There are 55 nations that are members of UEFA. All those nations organise two national competions. The League and The Cup. PLease find the nations below www.uefa.com/insideuefa/national-associations/ Those 55 nations are ranked based on the last five years in European club football. Current ranking www.uefa.com/nationalassociations/uefarankings/country/#/yr/2022Those ranking are based on what the clubs did in European Football over the last five years. How do the clubs get their points? Please see below www.uefa.com/nationalassociations/uefarankings/country/about/Please not that if a country has 5 teams in the European Competitions they will have to divide all the points they gather by five. If four, divide by four. If six , divide by six. The number of spots and the phase in which those spots are allocated is determined by UEFA based on the ranking Currently The Netherlands hold five spots 1. Champions League Groupstage 2. Champions League Third Qualifying Round 3. Europa League Group Stage 4. Conference League Third Qualifying Round 5. Conference League Second Qualifying Round To grab a a ticket you need to finish in the top 3 spots in the League or win the Cup. The win in the Cup is awarded with the highest Non Champions League ticket. However, if the Cup Winner is also in the top 2 spots in the league at the end of the season they can choose which ticket they want to use. They will always choose the Champions League spot since an out in the Champions League Third Qualifying Round or the Champions League Play Off (if they make it through the Third Qualifying Round) will give them an automatic spot in the Group Stage of the Europa League. So in this case the ticket will go to the number 3 in the league. This also mean the number 4 spot would also mean you will get a ticket. In The Netherlands we have play offs for the final ticket. Number 5-8 play each other for the final ticket. If the Cup winner is not in the top 3 it will be number 4-7. For all other nations its different.

Well stated. I have a PL question though. If West Ham wins the Europa League, and thus qualifies for the Champions League, what happens to the 4th place team, assuming it’s either Arsenal, Tottenham, or Manchester United. Does West Ham hold all of their seasons in their hands? The PL wouldn’t get a 5th team would it?

I’m watching the semi final with Marseille right now spoiler free. Hell of a game so far!!!
I was curious about your perspective on Europe leagues in general. In the states we have college football conferences and there is a debate as to if the skill level gap between them is widening. Historically speaking do you feel like the various domestic leagues in Europe are rather stable or are the top leagues, including down to Netherlands perhaps, pulling away from some of the others. Or has the top heavy nature of the big five more or less always been the case?

The thing is European football was arranged differently until 1992 when the Champions League was introduced. And the Bosman ruling in 1996 changed football forever. Until that ruling clubs could only have three non domestic players in their line up. After that ruling (free traffic of employees within the EU) clubs could have eleven non domestic players in their line up. All of sudden the clubs with money could buy all the talent from all over Europe. That raised the level of the topteams in terms of quality but also widened the gap. So its a bit of both.

That is key information. I like that. I didn’t know you could only keep 11 internationals, but yeah basically that means you could buy the entire starting lineup of the best other teams in smaller nations. Really puts the pressure on clubs like Feyenoord to keep developing talent. I was listening to them talk about a couple of guys possibly moving on since their value had raised so much this season.

Really puts the pressure on clubs like Feyenoord to keep developing talent. I was listening to them talk about a couple of guys possibly moving on since their value had raised so much this season. That is our hope. Our transfer record is 18 million euro for Dirk Kuijt to Lieverpool in 2006. Ajax has sold multiple players for over 50 million upt to 80 million since 2019. Its almost impossible to compete. This year players like Kokcu, Malacia and Sinisterra have developed so well we hope can break our transfer record. With the money that comes in we can buy young talented replacements and maybe some more reinforcements. That way we get stronger and tighten the gap a bit. Especially since both Ajax and PSV have a major overhaul planned this summer while we can stay somewhat stable. Ajax has lost their Director of Football (the man who made them so much money) after it came to light he had send unsollicited dickpics to female club employees. He had to leave. And their head coach, Erik ten Hag, has signed to become the new manager of Manchester United. Besides that quite a few players are leaving this summer. And what remains is a bit older and is already showing signs of decline. Ajax is still winning games but they are in trouble almost every game. PSV will get a new unexperienced head coach in Ruud van Nistelrooij. Bijg player but he still has a lot to prove as a manager. Its also expected a lot of their best players will leave. Add to that that statistics say they perform much better than they should because they are overperforming on expected goals and as a direct result expected points, meaning they score where they shouldnt, winning them points which they shouldnt aka luck. Both teams will possibly be less good next year leaving Feyenoord with a chance to aim high. Our players have increased in value a lot because of their performence in Europe. We have a real shot to change the dynamics in the Eredivisie.

Rumor has it Manchester United wants to sign Tyrell Malacia, our left back, for a hefty fee of 24 million euro.
That would be so awesome if true.

The Art of Defence Our back five were rock solid. Much congratulations!!! I am happy for them, bring in the final against Roma! I’ll be watching. This was an interesting much less aggressive affair, just played tight and consistently. They gave up no great chances. A few things could have found their way in but no big breakdowns or major threats. I’m rooting for a 9-7 shootout win in the final lol

I dont think we can catch them for second. But to me Feyenoord is a better team than PSV atm. We are behind because after the winter break we lost some games we wouldnt have if we didnt had to miss some key players.

With that lucky draw we secure spot 3 in the Eredivisie. This means we get to play in the Europa League. For now we enter in the play offs. However, if we win the Conference League against AS Roma we will go directly into the group stage. Or... AS Roma is now on an EL spot in the Italian Serie A. If they keep that spot, Feyenoord will also move directly into the group stage as well. In case we have to play the play offs in the EL and we lose we will move into the group stage of the Conference League. So in any case... Feyenoord has secured European Cup football until the winter break next season.
