The reveal of the cosmic breeding of Celestials and the upcoming emergence Can I say I told you so? Just finished it annnnnnnd, that was an epic. Still processing it really but I love the deep cosmic lore side of it. The establishment of planets as essentially “eggs” is something I never thought they’d get to, and I love how Earth now has this giant statue sticking out of it lol. I thought Black Knight would be a little more involved, but that stinger at the end was good. BLADE IS HERE! ArArRated - 1 egg over hard

It was a retcon even when it happened in the comics. I don't know what they'll do, but they'll be missing an opportunity if they don't confirm the Thanos / Eternal / deviant connection. With Kro absorbing properties of the Eternals he kille, he became intelligent and vaguely humanoid. Who is to say that didn't happen on other worlds with Eternals? The resulting more "evolved" deviants could have interbred with Eternals (as they did in the comic books). Also, while defined as Androids in the movie, the Eternals seem more like bio-mechanical replicants (in the Blade Runner tradition). I don't think pure, mechanical Androids would require interpersonal relationships or physical relations. The Celestials are proven liars in the MCU. That's an opportunity for Kevin and company to untangle this needlessly complicated pretzel they've made of the Eternals mythology. Besides, they've already done "adopted brothers" with Loki and Thor. No need for a retread, if you ask me. I just hope we get the sequel this movie deserves with which to explore this cosmic mythology further. GotG 2 further complicates the lore with Ego’s origin being decidedly different than the emergence birth established in Eternals. Though I think they will probably just leave that alone. Im still wondering about that. I mean it’s entirely possible Ego did have an emergence and after the planet was destroyed the first thing he remembers is floating in space. Or he was disembodied later due to some action he pulled and doesn’t remember just like the Eternals haven't remembered. Point being there are a few open avenues here that are in line. That being said I don’t think they need to bother with it. It’s not a contradiction at this point.

I also enjoyed the idea of true immortality and what. The choice of living with it can giving it up would be like. The concept of how your perceptions on life and death would change when a normal lifetime becomes such a small part of your own life, is pretty fascinating. I can appreciate both druids and Icarus’ conclusions.

Arishem the Judge and Ego are two distinctly different types of beings with dissimilar power levels, capabilities, and life cycles. Ego appears to be capable of sexual reproduction and viral replication (via a host). Celestials use eggs (which appear to be fertilized by cosmic energy).

This is true and I’m trying to parse the distinctions even though I probably shouldn’t be. It’s exactly how you described. But just for fun, Ego for instance also uses an implantation method into a planet but it clearly doesn’t have the same outcome. I’m wondering if he’s somewhat of a cousin to other celestials. IDK I’m just making something up for what they might not even have an answer to

Taxonomical classification of the various types of beings in the MCU will become necessary (especially when Mutants are formally introduced). I think what Ego and the Celestials have in common (as celestials with a small c) is that they are both capable of reproduction on a planetary scale. Their powersets manifest themselves in radically different ways for very different purposes. The result of Ego's preferred reproduction method is a universe filled with himself (similar to the titular monster of John Carpenter/Campell's, The Thing). The Celestials are interested in facilitating the development of diverse forms of intelligent life. Their motivation is unknown and, perhaps, cannot be known to lesser beings.

Another thing I appreciated about Eternals was visiting so many classical ancient civilizations, like Babylon and Mesopotamia. I do really wonder how any individual would view societal evolution if they had lived through all of these. How do you accept change and the wildly inconsistent standards of morality. After all you had the opportunity to absorb all of them as “normal” for an extended period of time. But, I also simply loved the visual representation of these places

Damn, just watched Eternals "again". The missing part when I was late to the session, to be exact. Anyway I missed more than originally thought. A whole hour...

I love how she’s played two characters now. I almost want to see an actor come in and play numerous different characters once. I think that would be a fun experiment.

It’s not in the category of other films that have been sorry enough to be in the 40’s or even 50’s on RT. There’s just nothing critically wrong here as there is with other broken CBMs in that realm. Although the B cinemascore is probably right. I’ll have to see it again. TDW unfortunately was the victim of a witch hunt mentality that missed what was so good about that film. It was woefully underrated by fans. So not exactly the same case here as far as I can tell yet. But we’ll see ;-)

I know it’s not perfect, but I say it easily takes the title of “most underrated” MCU movie away from Thor TDW and Iron Man 2.

I just think the B cinemascore, which is the lowest, is probably fair. IM2 and TDW have an A and A- respectfully, so I don’t know if Eternals is underrated by audiences overall. Maybe. I’m waiting for a second watch to see if I feel they got the most out of this. IM2 and TDW I feel they maxed out each scene. What are big criticisms so far?

Personally I was all in on the cosmic mythology so I found it intriguing all the way through. My only major complaints were that Gemma Chan was a mediocre lead and the visual design of the Deviants was ass on wheels. Otherwise I consider it to be easily the best of phase four. What were your criticisms?

What were your criticisms? I don’t really have any. I found the lore stuff, especially the visits to the ancient civilizations and the cosmic function of the celestials. Any time we saw them was brilliant. I’m not sure if it’s infinitely rewatchable but no real complaints. I don’t have a complaint about any of these, you know that ;-) I was asking what complaints there were to see if it was “underrated”. I could see boring being fair.

The film's supposed "wokeness" was the single biggest complaint I saw amongst the franchise's fans.
It's a top five MCU film for me, and was easily my favorite CBM of last year.

I mean let’s see. I suppose the most obvious is the gay couple with an onscreen male kiss. And I mean I won’t lie, it’s not an appealing visual to me personally, but WTF, are we saying this isn’t allowed and it’s “woke”? There was nothing gratuitous about it. Newsflash, it’s a normal relationship. The only other thing I can think of is the couple of gender swaps. I mean. This is something that could potentially be taken too far, but please find somebody who both cares about Ajak enough to worry about it, and who has a reason why it matters. To clarify, Im on team “Bond can’t be a woman”. But Ajak? Why not?

I was just pondering how the 48 RT score doesn’t make sense for this one. I’m an RT supporter, and feel the score is generally a pretty fair assessment, but there are the occasional films I feel land way off. And the problem here is that other mid 40’s and even mid 50’s films, typically start to reach “dumb” territory. Eternals doesn’t do that. Without naming them I’m thinking of other CBM movies in this area, and they have scenes that define the film as a whole for how nonsensical they are, although they aren’t bad enough to render the entire film as completely bad. You can still enjoy it and possibly even overlook these enough if you really wanted to. Yet they are objectively poorly crafted scenes. But again, Eternals doesn’t have this problem. It’s consistent and gets where it wants to go organically, with good performances, logical structure, and a great look. I would think I’d probably not question it if at worst it had landed in the mid 70’s, but 48 is pretty much a crime for this one. I can’t think of a CBM in the 50’s or worse that is even close to as good.

Australia was double fucked when Arishem appeared in the sky. They were looking at some Celestial Glockenspiel.

It feels like it's been a while since one of these 'Honest Trailers' actually amused me, but this one had a few funny bits (and once again the 'Starring' section was the best part). Also... {Spoiler}Druig sucks.

I have yet to engage in a discussion on who was right during this film. Does Druig have a good point? Does Icarus? Do the others? And are any of them right for stopping the emergence in the long run?

Congratulations, you've uncovered what makes the Eternals IP so engaging. You could argue for almost any one of the character's POV. Of course, I am squarely in camp Arishem.

Finally saw it. There's stuff I enjoyed but it makes the mistake of focusing on the more boring Eternals like Sersi and Ikaris instead of Kingo or Sprite or even Druig. Found the 'flashback' stuff more interesting than the main plot concerning the emergence of Tiamut.
