Iron Mang 3 It's true that even the "bad" MCU movies are not really bad (except for TIH ) but Iron Man 3 is certainly one of the weaker ones as far as I'm concerned. Its another guilty pleasure like Thor 2, but it's hard to forget the disappointment I felt watching this in the theaters. And I don't even care about the Mandarin. I just miss the suaveness of the Faverau movies. He understood this character and created a tone and style that fit him perfectly. I still wish he hadn't left. Shane Black just doesn't fill those shoes. I mean, who watches Iron Man and thinks "you know what this series needs? A seven year old side kick!" Come on, Disney. Get real. The Mark 47 is my favorite suit though. Cool gimmick. Love that lighter shade of gold! For a long time IM3 was my choice for the most underrated MCU entry, if such an animal can be said to exist. I like Thor 2 more than Thor 1 a fair amount, but that’s largely because the Freya funeral scene stuck in my head, and nothing in Thor 1 did. (OK: the robot did, but largely because I thought it looked unintentionally silly.) Anyway, what I liked about IM3 was the script, which I thought made for the most amusingly subversive superhero flick since, well, Iron Man. We see a kid, we expect he’s going to be Stark’s sidekick, we groan—and then Stark says he doesn’t need a sidekick and just leaves, and the kid ends up not being his sidekick. Then the Mandarin twist, which pleasantly surprised me—I didn’t see it coming at all, and Kingsley was of course great at selling both characters. So, I really enjoyed it when I saw it in theaters, and I’d be praising it—but (you probably knew that was coming) I caught about a half-hour of it about a year ago on TV and was bored. It just seemed slack, and after the Mandarin twist the real villain was kinda boring. I still liked the subversive stuff, but from a filmmaking perspective it just seemed blah (a very fancy film critic word, yes). Meanwhile, when I rewatched IM 1 on TV, it seemed as fun, freewheeling, and clever as it did when I first saw it. A half-hour of a movie is not enough to base a reevaluation on—but after having liked this one in theaters, I think now I’m more inclined to agree with your comments. Funny how we both came to a similar opinion despite having opposite ones on our respective initial viewings. To me, Iron Man 3 is just "watchable" and mildly enjoyable in its watchability.

Thor TDW is the best Thor movie by a million miles. It would make my top 6 MCU movies. Just let down by the goofy antics of Professor Selvig who for some reason becomes a clown when in The Avengers and Thor 1 he was a respected scientist. And Darcy to an extent. Everything that happens on Asgard is gold and exactly how I pictured a Thor movie would be. The score is one of the most memorable and the after credits scene is legendary. Malketh is pretty generic however but still retains an aura of mystery which I think gets overlooked. Too bad they had to follow this up with the awful Thor Ragnarok and dumb the character and mythos down. If I remember correctly, you're mostly highly critical of the MCU right? It's interesting that Thor 2 would end up being one of your favorites. This is indeed a polarizing movie. How high is it on your list of best MCU movies?

The Avengers Winter Soldier Infinity War Ironman First Avenger Thor TDW Age of Ultron
Then there is a big drop off to the rest. I'll expand a little more on why Thor 2 is great imo. The world building is awesome as shown immediately in the opening of the movie where Thor is going around the worlds re-establishing Asgards order, it feels real. The character relationships throughout the movie are very compelling. Between Thor and Heimdall a great buddy relationship borne from respect and honour. So when Thor asks Heimdall to betray his post as Guardian it's becomes compelling. Thor and Odin show an intriguing father-son conflict, Anthony Hopkins performance is dedicated. There’s the subtle romantic feelings Lady Sif has for Thor. Thor and Loki dynamic is amazing and fresh - unlike in Ragnarok. Thor witnessing the murder of his mother and feeling the rage and mourn is genuine. And the twist ending is severly under rated. Admittedly the chemistry between Thor and Natalie Portman aint great but its passable. When I rematch it I just skip the scenes with Darcy and Selvig, it makes it a much better movie.
But most importantly, Thor is treated with respect. In Ragnarok he becomes disgraced, self deprecating and parody levels amplified to a 1000%. A significant reason why I like IW is because again Thor is depicted correctly, with a macho swagger but also an emotional serious side. In Endgame they revert to his Ragnarok self, made as a fool, a caricature and turned into a laughing stock.

Everything in defense of TDW here is spot on. How this goodness gets all too often overlooked I have no idea.

Since Thor TDW is generating such great conversation I will expand on two points, one positive and one negative...
-I applaud the way the movie dedicates itself to Thor's mythos, but I'll say again that it's just too thin. WHY do the elves need darkness? You can't just say that light ruined their world. HOW? And what exactly happens when the universe is "dark" again? There's still only one ship of them left! So why do they need the whole damn Galaxy to be dark? Just find a damn cave, Maleketh! How does the light harm them? Physiologically they seem just fine. The history between the elves and Asgard was intriguing, but again, way too thin.
-On a different note: Darcy isn't all that bad. I'm sorry, HauntedKnight! I don't love her by any means, but to me she's just a typical comic relief character. Unnecessary perhaps, but not anywhere near as bad as the comic relief characters in the Ant Man and Spiderman Holland movies. I'll take Darcy over annoying social media obsessed Flash any day! I dare even say that I find Darcy funny a lot of the time. I'm sorry Haunted Knight!!!!&!!!
And hey, how about a third one: Loki Lokington is awesome. That warrants repeating. I love Loki.

I also agree with most of the positive things that have been said here about TDW. I like the movie. I just don't think it's anything close to greatness.

I dont mind they kept the details low on that. In fact I think it works better. The elves are not just an other worldly alien species, they were around before the big bang itself making them a sort of inter dimensional threat. With that comes a lot of unanswered questions, as are raised in real life about what existed before the creation of our universe. Their motives may come across as generic but I think having a cloak of mysterious aura about them is suitable. They are unlike anything else.

The Winter Soldier
This movie reminds me of how truly special the MCU is. They could've just made this one a big ad for Avengers 2. Could've tried to rip off The Avengers and replicate it's tone. But they didn't. Instead they committed to giving Cap a solo movie that honored his mythology and earned this character a place as a fan favorite in his own right. It's really remarkable. They were able to have their cake and eat it too so to speak. This movie, more than all others, proves the MCU's success as an interconnected series of franchises, each serving the whole, but also delivering definitive solo movies for each character.
We got golden age Cap in an old fashioned action serial, spangled comicky Cap fighting aliens with Thor, and now grounded Cap in a conspiracy thriller. And it all works seemlessly! I love the MCU.

I always thought it would be amusing to see a timeline where Loki won in the original "Avengers", just to see how the Hydra-conspiracy would scramble to cope with having a new alien overlord.

Ant Man
I know I've been hard on this franchise but god damn it if I don't enjoy the shit out of this one everytime I rewatch it. It's really just the second one that I find mediocre. Sure, I have some issues with this one too: the humor can be a bit cringey and the non-Ant Man scenes can feel very generic. Act One is kind of boring. ECT. But there's also so much to like here. Reed may not have the style of a Watiti or even a Whedon, but he delivers when it comes to the action. I give him credit there. Listening to the commentary he also pushed for realistic macro photography so credit there too. I love every one of the Ant Man scenes. The character is just loads of fun and the toy train sequence is such a blast. It's seriously still one of my favorite superhero fight scenes of all time. This may not be anywhere near as good as the genre's best entries but it's still a solid movie that always entertains.

I wasn't that into the movie when I first saw it at the theatre, but when rewatching it on Blu-ray, I found I enjoyed it a bit more. It's funny you mention the commentary, as I listened to it too after I first got the Blu-ray and was surprised to hear Paul Rudd mention the Australian radio comedy duo of Hamish & Andy (apparently he'd met them at one stage).
