That tactic hasn't worked out incredibly well for him recently. I do applaud him and others for trying to revitalize the dying genre of the historical drama.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind that making a comeback. I'm mixed on it. On the one hand they're always entertaining, in the internet age, it's a lot easier to find where they may have played fast and loose with historical truth.

It will receive a $160 million refund for its production in Malta. A cinema record in Europe.

Oh great--so it is getting money from the taxpayer? So much for the much-vaunted capitalist Hollywood movie business
a welfare enterprise.

Impossible. $160 million could be the film's entire budget. There is a far more credible figure from The Times of Malta - €46.7 million or about $50 million USD. It's still a large figure for an American production filmed in Europe, but if the scheme works, and other large-scale Hollywood productions film there, it would inject millions more into the Maltese economy.

Art and artists are supported in Europe. We think itś important enough to pay for it collectively. We dont see it as a business. It isn't art and artists. It is a transnational corporation that has perhaps more money flowing through it than several countries combined. Why does it need taxpayer help? No wonder they are so eager to do wokeness--they can't go out of business when the public is funding their production costs this way.
There was an article years ago on Canada and this maquila phenomenon as it is called.
"Combining all levels of tax credits and the indirect subsidy of the lower Canadian dollar, a typical maquila production budgeted at U.S. $43 million could reduce costs by at least 57 per cent, or U.S. $24.5 million, by shooting in Canada. Extrapolating this savings rate to the total maquila production expenditures of just over Cdn. $1 billion in Canada in 2006, various Canadian governments provided indirect subsidies of $570 million to Hollywood production."
So in other words, taxpayers are funding Hollywood's supposed self-sustaining financial ventures and it does diddly squat for artists in the places where this money is coming from since it is not encouraging local film production.

Holy shit!
If this is true, I think we're in for another Ridley Scott flop. I hate to say it, as someone looking forward to this. Scott needs to dial the budgets back.
