Holy shit!
If this is true, I think we're in for another Ridley Scott flop. I hate to say it, as someone looking forward to this. Scott needs to dial the budgets back.
Well, look at the last few Scott films. They havent really been all that impressive. Please be ok at least or better than the recent Napoleon Interesting this comes out on the heels of "the execs being blown away"

The production supposedly got substantial tax credits out of Malta. North of 100M according to some reporting. I wonder if the 310M figure is a "net" number or if it takes incentives into account? Might soften the blow…

if I haven’t already answered, my stance is that of Top Gun 2. I have no idea how they’ll make it work, but damnit, I’m willing to let them try

Along that same line I was thinking it has to be a decades later, the state of the republic Maximus paved the way to establish comes under threat by,,,,,,, IDK. Some truly despotic new emperor??? Is there anywhere else to go with it? That’s all I’ve got.
I mean I do like the idea of continuing stories in the same world that only have the occasional familiar face.

I agree, but I do wonder with these decades later sequels if that’s only a sentiment for those of us who were around for the original. I’m imagining these whippersnappers who see this first may hold this as THE Gladiator film regardless. Especially if they subtitle it instead. I’m always amused at the generational gap for Star Wars for instance.

I think Scott just wanted to make another hyper-violent arena-based combat movie and decided to use the Gladiator brand name to give the film some built-in equity. The first film reached out into the culture in a particular way… I don't see this film having much, if anything, to do with the plot or scenarios of the last movie. I don't even know who the titular Gladiator is in this installment. Could it be Denzel? Did Papa Pascal have the time to bulk up between TV shows, films, and tick-tock domination? He should have pulled a Cameron and added an 'S' to the end of the title so we could expect an even bigger spectacle than the first.

Lolol
gladiatorSSSSSS
Truly though you may be right about the motivation here. Adding a brand name gives it instant eyes. We’ve even seen entirely unrelated scripts repurposed into brand names before for that very reason.
Hopefully though, he’s got an engaging and worthwhile idea in there, even if the sequel nature is tenuous

I think Denzel is playing a mentor-like role in this similar to Oliver Reed in the original film. I suspect the lead will be Paul Mescal since he's playing the kid as an adult now.

Maybe Scott should have made a Spartacus movie instead? Or maybe even a different story altogether still set in the Roman era? Like one about Octavian/Augustus? Constantine?
The last days of the Empire even? Like a sort of apocalyptic scenario in the ancient world. The obvious drama, sex and violence is a no-brainer here. At any rate, some interesting ideas could be explored here. It would be kind of funny in a way, if those same Goths (woefully depicted btw) are shown to displace the Romans, which they actually did. This time not depicted as stone age barbarians but a little more advanced and, say they are wearing some false horned Viking helmets and riding some elephants just to fuck with people

This sounds great. Maybe the $300M price tag will be worth it.
