Yeah its slow paced. But the LotR trilogy wasnt exactly fast paced either. But the show definitely needs to pick up the pace. But I think thats coming when the storylines start to develop. The thing with the movies though is that I still found myself interested in what's going on. With this show as of now I'm only interested with the Elrond and Galadriel stuff. Granted we're only two episodes in, so maybe things will get better for me. I totally agree. I liked what I saw purely based on the fact that they did do a lot of things right. Visuals, score, vfx, costumes, sets. But in the end they will need to have something engaging happen, a good story needs to unfold and characters need to develop. I can see the show's potential but its far from a lock in to me.

They don't have any source material to work with. They're basing this off a few paragraphs of the Appendex from Return of the King and making the rest of up entirely. Would you prefer no show at all then? That goes without saying.

Would you prefer no show at all then? That goes without saying. I guess I don’t understand this logic. If you don’t like this sort of thing then don’t tune in, no big deal. If you do like this sort of thing then why would you want it to fail? If it fails surely they won’t adapt any more Tolkien for a while. Or at least they’ll have a solid excuse not to. If it’s a success then Tolkien and other fantasy authors are a commodity to the studios that finance tv and film. Since it’s created either way what’s your best case scenario here? No more adaptations?

If it’s a success then Tolkien and other fantasy authors are a commodity to the studios that finance tv and film. Since it’s created either way what’s your best case scenario here? No more adaptations? There is more at stake here than the quality of the TV show. The lands of Middle-eart do not belong to Amazon. They didn't make this setting and story, they didn't craft any of it, they didn't spend decades of their life at a typewriter, writing and rewriting this mythos with loving details. They haven't earned the right to do whatever they want with it. They're just business moguls who threw money at something without understanding what makes it work or what makes it special. A man named J.R.R. Tolkien spent decades lovingly crafting Middle-earth to give England a mythology, since they were robbed of one by the Norman invasion. If they can't be bothered to adapt Tolkien's work in a way that is faithful to his words, then they should not be making this series at all. So yes, I hope this series fails and we never see another Tolkien adaptation again, since only the material was only treated with respect one time and one time only, back in 1996-2003. And yes, I would prefer no more fantasy adaptations if this is exemplary of how these soulless studios intend to treat the writings of various authors. We'll always have the books, and that's good enough. I will not tolerate some hack raping someone else's work to their own ends. Companies like Amazon and their Yes Men don't see works deserving of respect or of the time and effort to adapt them well. They just see money and a means to push their own ideological agendas putting someone else's name and brand on it with little care to the fandom or the quality. In fact, they're hoping to con us into liking it. I watched them do that to the Wheel of Time series, and many others. I am done tolerating companies like Amazon feeling like they can just butcher the writings of an author far superior to whatever hacks they hire and get away with it.

Everyone wants to be Marvel nowadays. But Marvel actually has tons of actual source material. This series will be based on a few summary passages from Simlarion at best. More than dialogue will be extrapolated. The whole thing will be extrapolated because the Simalarion is not a story, it is basically a Middle Earth history book. Next will no doubt be the series about what happened to Balin at Moria, then the Legolas mini series, the Riders of Rohan series, the Gollum prequel. And hey, maybe that sounds awesome, but at some point it’s just not Tolkien anymore. Can’t we just be happy with the movies we have and move on? Why does it have to be just the original stuff? Because Tolkien's Legendarium isn't a comic book series owned by a parent company where the original writer(s) signed waver to have their characters continue with new adventures by other artists, or a franchise that's meant to split off into spinoffs created by other creators like Star Wars was. It was all from the mind of one man with one specific goal in mind. J.R.R. Tolkien is where Middle-earth begins and ends. I thought we as a society still valued creator's rights, and held the authors made the cornerstone works of our culture in high esteem. How come none of you seem to give a damn about the man who made Middle-earth? Back in 2003, when the last of the movies came out, if someone had suggested making a TV series out of a few paragraphs of a book and letting the studio push their politics into it, everybody would have reacted in horror and disgust, and rejected it. Yet now I see hardcore Tolkien fans like @ghostyghostington being told to shut up and just accept whatever Amazon shits on them. When did we stop respecting creators, especially harmless even virtuous, authors like J.R.R. Tolkien?

This first ep was epic. They’re really covering a ton of ground in the setup and a lot of ancient history is there for the exploring. My person I’ve is one of knowing the basic events that are going to unfold but not the detail of it. I dig the watch over the defendants of morgoth loyalists, I dig Galadriel’s determination, and I dig the innocent perspective of the harfoots. Can’t wait to see where this goes. So that was Illuvitar arriving at the end right?

The enemy they couldn’t find hiding in plain sight. IDK who this meteor man is. Perhaps one of the wizards?

Theres a lot of small hooks, i thought. No major "Sauron is here!!!" arrows in Middle Earth pointing toward the impending doom but... {Rings of Power Spoiler} Nory's mystery giant who fell out of a comet. The orcs, thought to have been driven out of the world essentially, are back attacking mens villages. The box that the dwarves have contains something they kept secret from the elves and are worried the elves are after it. The boy, Theo i think his name was, finding a broken sword of Sauron and it drawing in his blood and reforging itself. The south lands man claiming orcs have driven their people out of their lands. (not sure if this is the same area as the other villages attacked) Yeah, but it all felt like a bunch of little subplots to me. There was no central inciting incident. Honestly, it feels like they are only playing it so slowly because they have to- there’s no actual source material behind this adaptation and they’re locked in for five seasons. I think the best bet for more quality LoTR material is with whomever owns the rights to the actual material. Amazon actually does not have access to any of the remaining unadapted Tolkien stuff. They don’t even have Similarion. Really? I felt it was pretty clearly the Sauron is hiding in plain sight story that is effecting everything around them binding everything. It’s what causes everything the rest are reacting to. I especially appreciated the watch over the descendants of morgoths followers

I think I get ya. I guess I’m more along the thought of, so long as the books aren’t changed, we will always have those regardless. So if they can make an entertaining adaptation based on 100 pages of appendix information, I’m perfectly ok with them trying. Even if it fails and is terrible. So long as the books don’t change then they’ll always remain the purest form of Middle Earth.
I’m also super used to seeing adaptations of novels be terrible so I am easily able to disconnect any adaptation from their source. But I totally understand not wanting greedy studios and crappy writers manipulating and tarnishing the product you love.

Yeah it is a little weird but Im giving the series a go with an open mind. So far it's not bad. Sure I understand the slow vibe complaints but Im not willing to write it off just yet. So far I like all the characters except for the black elf and his love interest? Thats kinda boring tbh. Didnt even care we saw a certain creature with them first. Also yes Tolkien is great, there is no doubt about that. In saying that, he is not some divine being levitating above mortal men lol. It's not like he wrote the bible or something equal in magnitude. Relax dude

My current idea heading into episode 2. The stranger is Saruman, the oldest of the wizards sent to contest the reemergence of Sauron who is building up in Mordor, near where the cow got sick. Those people are being watched over in south Gondor.

2nd ep done and I can’t stop thinking about the locations and implications. How they’re depicting the return of Sauron after his slinking into the wild, the clues that he still exists, and the various encounters of different peoples. None of them can see the whole but if they could!
The watch in the decedents of morgoth loyalists appears to be very near Mordor, which is why there is both poison and orc activity there. The way morgoth relics hold power is pretty intense. His GM ok seems to be key to holding control over sentient beings. The forging of the rings is imminent and it’s great to delve back into dwarvendom to make that happen. And who is the stranger? It’s clearly a wizard I’m nearly sure. I can’t tell which though. And Galadriel is awesome.

We’ve only just scratched the surface and I mentioned this in our review but I hope they have a decent arc for season 1 mapped out so that we aren’t just building up constantly to no kind of a small payoff.

It seems like the season may possibly conclude with the reveal of Annatar. As others are distracted with tracking the emergence of orcs back to Mordor. Maybe?

What does everyone think about IMDb (which is owned by Amazon) blocking all negative reviews? Only 6/10 and above have been published. Review bombing is certainly a big problem, but this is some Orwellian type shit. Literally no negative reviews are allowed right now. For all the talk of “rigged” reviews- it’s now clearly officially happening. Regardless of whether one likes the show or not this type of practice should be met with disapproval.

The public clearly can't be trusted with it because you have people out here giving out 10s and 1s like theyre candy on Halloween. So I would hope that any filmmakers, tv show producer, etc. have a better way to gage whether something is a success or a failure.

If the public is this easily duped then they deserve to watch crap shows and films. People are also easily duped by revolutionaries and strongmen and political propaganda. Do they deserve the corruption, dictatorship and oppression that follows? We’re entering some real philosophical territory now!

If anything this is only making it worse. Personally when it comes to rating a show, I feel like it shouldn't be ratable until the series is done with it's first season. Not saying that this won't stop trolls or fanboys from abusing it, but it would make more sense. You will never stop someone from rating a movie or series a 1 or a 10. So why remove it? Or at the least if you're going to remove one thing, why not just remove the whole thing all together. I think when it comes to ratings, people are extremely hypocritical.

No, he isn't God, but I don't think we should treat his writings like we do the average comic book writer, either.
