Yeah you could see the series billion dollar budget on display.
I thought the first two episodes were okay. It does have potential.

Like my wife said, they basically spend the first two episodes introducing characters and setting the scenes. It has a lot of potential because they do a lot of things right. But I agree with you, story and character development will be key. As always.

Wouldnt have a clue what is from the source material/what is canon but of course you hear about it, the political stuff and the two movie trilogies Still need to see Ep 2

I refuse to watch this. Amazonh as made it clear they don't give a damn about Tolkien, and so I don't give a damn about their series.

The show has promise. Ive watched the second episode now. So what is the giant exactly? Some wizard with amnesia or the same race as Sauron?

The show has promise. Ive watched the second episode now. So what is the giant exactly? Some wizard with amnesia or the same race as Sauron? That seems the consensus. He gave off strong Gandalf vibes. I had read that the show only has access to second age material tho so I’m not sure if that rules Gandalf out. I’ve read there’s a bit of a contradiction in Tolkiens books regarding when the blue wizards appear, and that they might have shown up in the second age, so I’m thinking if they go the wizard route it will either be a totally new character or a blue wizard. There were 5 wizards mentioned in LOTR. Saruman the White, Gandalf the Grey, Radagast the Brown, and two unnamed Blue wizards. But I’m also leaving a window open if they decide to go in a very different direction with it.

Initially I thought it was pacing as well but after a second watch I think more of the problem is we kind of jump quickly from storyline to storyline, and there are 4 different plot threads to follow. So I think it felt jarring at first to try to follow all these plot lines the first time thru. On a repeat I didn’t really have this issue.

Boy I’ll tell ya, this show was so boring Alexa asked me to change the channel! Yeah honestly my biggest issue so far with this series is the pacing. Yeah its slow paced. But the LotR trilogy wasnt exactly fast paced either. But the show definitely needs to pick up the pace. But I think thats coming when the storylines start to develop.

Is it because they’re modifying source material or did they do something special? They don't have any source material to work with. They're basing this off a few paragraphs of the Appendex from Return of the King and making the rest of up entirely.

The characters were quite bland as well. Theres a lot of small hooks, i thought. No major "Sauron is here!!!" arrows in Middle Earth pointing toward the impending doom but... {Rings of Power Spoiler} Nory's mystery giant who fell out of a comet. The orcs, thought to have been driven out of the world essentially, are back attacking mens villages. The box that the dwarves have contains something they kept secret from the elves and are worried the elves are after it. The boy, Theo i think his name was, finding a broken sword of Sauron and it drawing in his blood and reforging itself. The south lands man claiming orcs have driven their people out of their lands. (not sure if this is the same area as the other villages attacked)

Honestly, it feels like they are only playing it so slowly because they have to- there’s no actual source material behind this adaptation and they’re locked in for five seasons. I think the best bet for more quality LoTR material is with whomever owns the rights to the actual material. Amazon actually does not have access to any of the remaining unadapted Tolkien stuff. They don’t even have Similarion.

With this show as of now I'm only interested with the Elrond and Galadriel stuff. Granted we're only two episodes in, so maybe things will get better for me.

The characters are all likable, interesting and well developed. There’s a strong central plot to move the story forward and keep the tension high. Everything is done with purpose.
