This whole video is fun for taking you back to the excitement level pre-Infinity War. These guys are jacked like we all were as they get ready to see the first trailer. So watch the whole thing, but specifically watch at 5:20 for an interesting reveal.
Did you catch it? This nerdy as hell dude was so into DC that he wasn’t aware of what Nick Fury’s Avengers post credit scene in Iron Man really meant. And it occurred to me that I’m nearly the same way about DC. I know some broad strokes but the reality is that a ton of dyed in the wool fans simply have absolutely no idea what it is about the opposing company that other people find so fascinating.
And this is where I think Marvel has succeeded in film while DC has struggled. Personally speaking it’s the same reason I was always a Marvel guy in the first place and that is that Marvel have always proudly introduced their entire roster. They were able to have a conversation with the guy in this video and say “hey, we aren’t just Spiderman and the X-Men, have you seen what the Guardians are doing? Did you know how cool Ant Man is? Hey btw check out how interconnected different civilizations like the Kree, Skrulls, Xandarians, Asgardians, and Sovereign are! Yeah Black Panther and Captain Marvel are awesome too and just wait till we get to Nova, Moonknight, Silver Surfer, Fantastic Four, Blade, etc”
Meanwhile, from a Marvel fan perspective, we’re still waiting on DC to do much of anything that isn’t related to both, well you know who. I have no reason to invest because they’re actively telling me they don’t have anything else to invest in. They need to present something that will cause a guy like this who’s always read Marvel to have an epiphany that the larger DC Universe is actually worth his time. The alternative is that movies like Shazam and Birds of Prey will keep being also rans at the box office and DC will have unknowingly convinced themselves that their only recourse is to keep drawing from the same well.
And I keep hearing they have a broader picture to offer, but until they do, there is going to remain a seemingly uneducated populace wondering why a bunch of increasingly jealous DC nerds are begging them to love their favorite toys as much as they do. And I think generally understanding that and perhaps reaching across the aisle to be more familiar with what you’re missing but not reaching across the aisle to be pushy, is probably the way to go.
