I love fantasy macguffins and histories. I completely nerd out over stuff like this. Rewatching the early MCU movies is a lot of fun for this reason. The Tesseract really factors into the saga so seemlessly in so many important ways...
Big Bang- Space Stone created
Some point in the universe's ancient history- Odin finds it.
Some point in the Middle Ages- Odin leaves it on Earth.
1940s- Red Skull finds it. Howard Stark recovers it.
1960s- Howard Stark teams up with Vanko to create the arc reactor based on his research on the Tesseract.
1980s- Mar-Vel, a Kree scientist comes to Earth to use it to create a light speed engine to save the Skrulls.
1990s- Carol Dancers recovers it, Goose eats it, Fury recovers it.
2008- Tony Stark, Howard's son, creates a chest piece based on the arc reactor
2010- Stark uses his father's work to create a new element based on his notes on the Space Stone
2012- Thor takes it back to Asgard
2017-18- Loki steals it, Thanos takes it from him.
2019- Thanos destroys it.

you know me too well lol I’m fascinated by all of these histories The orb still stands out to me. Who was this society on Morag? How long did they have it, where did they get it, and why don’t the celestials still have it? There’s a sinister history there. I’m inclined to believe the Odin went for the gauntlet theory, so it’s possible he left there and maybe even destroyed a celestial to get it in the first place. Hummmmm And what’s so special about Vormir? Is the Soul Stone kept there because it wants to be? Because it needs to be? We’re there guardians before the Red Skull? Or was he taken there when it was first stored there? Or when the last guardian was removed? Will it return there automatically after it’s been taken? I wonder how Agamoto first came across the time stone, where Odin first found the tesseract, and how Thanos had the mind stone, but we know very little about the histories of those The Aether seems to have mostly been in the possession of the elves and then hidden away.

Since the stones are no longer relevant to the story I kind of doubt we will ever get any more details in future movies. Though perhaps that glimpse of a celestial using the power stone in GotG will be explained in The Eternals.

I’m tending to agree that we’ll rarely hear about them again, but I do wonder if maybe the soul stone would re-emerge possibly. I’m still suspicious that it returns to vormir somehow but who knows.
