Now I mean this sincerely, there is no need to worry, or gloat if that’s your thing, and I don’t mean this as anything other than a “well this is an interesting moment in life” type of comment,,,
But it seems the branch of the company I work for, has decided they have no viable prospects through the end of the year and can no longer rationalize paying hundreds of people to not produce actual work. And so I will be searching for new employment it seems. This isn’t absolutely guaranteed, but it seems imminent now and although I don’t know when I’ve accepted it.
Now the good news is, I’ve been traveling for 5 years now, and on several occasions have dreamed of what it would be like to,,, ya know,,, not be on the road all the time. I’ve seen many great things, but I was as ready to move on as I could be, while still enjoying what I was doing. So I look forward to whatever is next, I’m just a little concerned about what that might be and how open the job market is.
I’ve had a great time on the road. I’ve seen countless cities, large and small, most of which I never thought I would. And I spent time exploring them so I Know what it feels like to be in many different parts of the country. I’ve sat along the cliffs of Yosemite Valley, overlooked the Pacific Ocean from Seattle to San Diego, crossed the Golden Gate, stared at Rushmore and Niagara Falls, found my favorite sandwich shop in the world in Raleigh, cruised the Great Lakes, walked in the deserts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, stood on the spot where JFK was assassinated, watched Falcon Heavy launch and return it’s boosters, driven the entire length of the Keys, seen every NFL Stadium in person, and flown to Puerto Rico, multiple islands of the Bahamas, and the British Virgin Islands. It was an eye opening experience. I won’t forget it.

Luckily I’ve got a pot of PTO, my car is paid off and my wife has a safe job, so we’re secure enough until I can get something. It’s just my industry as a whole is in the tank right now. But it is one that will come back. We’ll see. I’ve got thoughts on this protest stuff but that’s another thing. I think we’re all getting played.

It’s going to be a little tight, but I’ve never been one to derive happiness from money. As long as I have enough to get by I’m as happy as I can ever be, and I do. Truth is I needed an excuse to change it up anyway so here it is. Weeeeeeeeee :-)

So sorry to hear that, Arch. Good to hear you’re taking it well, but that’s really lousy. Wishing you all the best and hoping you’ll find something soon.

Genuinely sorry to hear the bad news, my friend.
I've also had to deal with a volatile professional situation for some time now. I can't say that I was coping with it half as well as you seem to be.
I am happy to report that after several weeks of pounding the virtual pavement, I am now comfortably situated in a new role that is more profitable and challenging. I hope that is some consolation to you.
I wish you the very best of luck wherever your path may take you.

I appreciate it and I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t worrisome and I’m definitely concerned about having trouble finding something for a long time, but I’m content and know I’ll survive so I can only wake up the next morning right? Lol. Thank you for sharing. I’m glad you recovered quickly.

Indeed, tomorrow will by all accounts be my last day.
I can’t describe this. It’s not just losing a job that won’t exist anymore. It’s been an experience. I’ve seen things I’ll always cherish. The entire country sincerely felt like my back yard and now I don’t know if I’ll ever step into many parts of it.
It sounds dramatic, I know, but this is starting to hurt. Not the paycheck, but the places, the freedom, the experiences, and the people. I loved spending the short time I had, wherever I was, trying to love what it was like to call that region home for the people I met. It made no name town USA come alive for me. There are too many places to even start to name them, but I can close my eyes and know what it was like to be in each of them. And I know that doesn’t make any sense to anybody else but I needed to say I’ll miss it. I’ll miss the people and their towns, big and small, even those I only saw once. I really will.

Damn man, I'm sorry to hear that.
Quarantine caught up with me early. My restaurant closed and it's in the air that we might do take out service but I just don't see many of us going back. I'm glad that you had a great time on the road. Sounds terrific and fun, adventurous. Here's hoping you find something to fill the void in your heart and wallet. Good luck, cheers.

Thanks you guys, sincerely. I truly appreciate it. Fear not though, I’m genuinely good. We’re pretty darn thrifty by nature and I’m far more fortunate than many. At the end of the week I learned that the global company my division is a part of is paying us severance the equivalent of three whole months, plus I’m one of those jerks who saves up their vacation time for a rainy day, of which I have an additional 6 weeks. We’ll stretch that like crazy if it comes to it and it’s possible, even if it’s boring, to get by on my wife’s salary alone. So no pressure. I’m not getting evicted or starving or anything terrible. Essentially the goal is to find a job by the end of the year and it’ll be like this was just a long bizarre vacation.

ArArArchStanton , I’ve been meaning to tell you this and am not sure how to word it… Please don’t take this the wrong way, it has absolutely nothing to do with you personally. Call it, I don’t know, a public service announcement. My father lost his job a while back—a job that he’d had for decades and that paid him well, gave him gifts and great insurance, etc. He was still healthy and able, but new people bought the company and determined he was just too old for them. OK. At first he said everything was OK, he’d move past it, but he was heartbroken—and felt (1) unwanted and (2) that he was no longer the breadwinner. It wrecked his self-esteem and his (for lack of a better word) masculinity, even though he soon got a new job that didn’t pay as well but was stable. Even after he got the new job, he was bitter and took it out on the rest of us in his family. Something like losing his job, which seems important but not life-shattering, was enough for him to have what I can only call a mental breakdown. Throughout he always insisted that he was in the right and that his family was “betraying” him, and he refused to go for any kind of help. Worse, it lasted for nearly a year. For those of us who know and love him, it felt like hell. Even now it’s not completely over. Now, again, that’s just my experience and probably won’t happen with anyone else, but it made me much more aware of the psychological dangers of being let go than I ever had been before. So, all I’m trying to say is, if you’re feeling really down or something, please do talk to someone, even to us Internet strangers here. I just wish my dad had had someone with whom to go through his feelings. Again, all the best, Arch… You have my best wishes and (though you may not like the word! ) prayers.

That’s awesome man. I really appreciate it. I won’t lie, I’ve had a couple of nights where I just think of these small little places I got to visit on a regular basis and I miss them a little. Would anybody be interested in some trip pictures or is that weird? Lol
More to your point though, I’ve unfortunately had some experience with business closure before. During the downturn in ‘08 business was so slow they got rid of the sales department at the hotel I was at, and 3 years later business was so good the next hotel I was at sold to the neighboring resort who released the entire staff in order to use their own. Fun times.
So I’ve been through this which in a way is good. I’ve actually identified several companies who competed with mine and I’m submitting resumes now so I’ve got some promise.
I know what you mean about it weighing on you whether you want it to or not though. You’re absolutely right and I genuinely appreciate your concern and thoughtfulness in reaching out.

Again, my post was really just a public service announcement more than anything… These things are tough.
