Boy what a disappointment and a dumb idea to begin with. Sure.. get the star of the show to appear as a kid and do..nothing
Shouldve made a movie between seasons or maybe more of that New York war, which was really brief actually
Any thoughts on this film?

The movie was basically just showing us all the stories we've already heard. I didn't care for it.

I could see that Chase wanted to sidestep the formula that made the show wildly popular - pervasive sociopathic violence - in favor of a coming of age story. The movie falls somewhere in between Goodfellas and The Wonder Years. I think the movie lacked focus, and should have likely been about Tony's ascension into the criminal world. What we ended up with was an odd compromise that has some heartfelt moments, but is unrecognizable as a chapter in the Sopranos saga.
The movie is desperately missing the black humor and off-kilter banality of the series.

As great as James is. They couldve just recasted with maybe Andy Garcia or Brendan Fraser?
Or maybe have Tony send the guys to the old country, Italy and something happens if you want to use him minimally. Or send them anywhere really

Or send them anywhere really Or had a spinoff focusing on a side characters rise to power and quest for revenge. Furio: A Soprano Tale. I think they were better off leaving well enough alone. The problem is that no urgent story about The Sopranos needs to be told. Seeing what happened to Furio after he went back home is superficially interesting, but it would suck if he died or otherwise came to a bad end (which, if we're being honest, is what likely happened to him). Continuing for the sake of it weakens the show's legacy. I recently rewatched a portion of The Sopranos. The intrigue and violence are undoubtedly entertaining, but what made the show unique, in my opinion, was its humor, surrealism, and the exploration of the consequences of the main character's behavior on his inner life and family. Who ever heard of a mob boss fainting dead away due to uncontrollable anxiety? Also, the show is about a specific time and place, as much as it is about the Sopranos crew. There's something tragic about Tony in that he gains insight and self-awareness with Dr. Melfi's help but never attains the will to do anything about it. In any case, David Chase's work is better suited to the silver screen as his themes and ideas likely can't be summed up in a scant 90-minute presentation. The Many Saints of Newark felt like (an admittedly weak) pilot for a new TV series set in the world of the Sopranos.

I spared myself the disappointment by never seeing it.
