My university has been on strike for more than a month now. I ebb and flow between being worried and outright pissed off. Now they're talking about applying for pass/fail grades or assessed grades (for courses that are 70% completed according to our individual course syllabi), and I don't know whether the courses in my core program meet that threshold, or if they qualify for assessed grade completion (because apparently not all programs do), or what to do if they don't. It's like being in limbo waiting to scramble in case the strike is resolved, but yesterday came the most definitive hint yet that it could go on for months.
Has anyone else been in this position before? Even if it's not school, like a job. How do you be on strike? My daily routine makes less sense to me everyday. It's almost like being in lock down again. We were half way through the second semester of my first year, and I signed up for summer courses in the hopes of getting out of uni sooner. Everything's up in the air. I don't think my posting is much less usual than it always is, but if it is, that's why.

Sorry to hear that, Cat.
Is it possible to transfer to another uni and get credit for whatever's done already? Maybe even an online course if it's a distance issue?

Sorry to hear that, Cat. Is it possible to transfer to another uni and get credit for whatever's done already? Maybe even an online course if it's a distance issue? I'm considering checking out that possibility. I spent a long, long time working in restaurants to the point where I'd long given up on university. It kind of blew my mind when they accepted me. I've wanted this for so long it's difficult to contemplate giving it up. I intend to ask if it's possible to transfer elsewhere. Just for knowledge's sake it could help to know. Failing that, it's either stick it out (whatever that looks like) or leave. The school makes me want to leave, like really slam the door in its face, but I also feel like I can't. I've wanted this for too long and with it comes a degree and a career. Hell, a life.
Thanks man. With any luck it will be over soon. In 3 days it will have been a month, so not the longest but not the shortest either. I guess we'll see <-(anticlimactic sentence to end post).

Whats the strike caused by anyway? It's a wage dispute. Union representing faculty says wages aren't keeping up with costs of living. Both sides say the other is being greedy and unwilling to negotiate.

That’s awful. And what’s worse isn’t the pass fail thing but the shortcoming of actual education. College is where you actually want to go to class. You don’t want someone just signing you off. But no I’ve never had this experience before
What are they on strike about?

Sorry to hear. My only advice would be to not give it up completely. If you have to transfer or wait it out…don’t let the time you’ve already spent trying to achieve this go to waste without that qualifying slip of paper.
Hope it gets resolved soon for ya. Keep ya head up!

Keep ya head up! Thank you, man. Thank you all. With any luck my next update on the matter will be strike's over woohoo. It's a new week and my optimism is back on track.
Salary negotiations is what's up. Seems like it's happening all over.

- Tentative deal reached
- May return to classes next week if tentative deal is ratified later this week
- Keeping head up not in vain

Hope it all works out. Ah, to be in college again. I enjoyed those years so much. I miss the university experience.

Hope it all works out. Ah, to be in college again. I enjoyed those years so much. I miss the university experience. I really appreciate that. I'm mixed about the university experience though. I spent two years in college shoring up my education gap to qualify for entering university, and it was online classes because of the lock downs. My class/year may be the first and last to have graduated from our college without ever setting foot on campus. I'm thankful for university in person to help reacquaint with the outside world. My attitude going in is use the practice; talk to people, socialize, take advantage. It's going okay, but for the most part, I hate going there and back, or even being there in the halls. The only place I feel decent is actually in my classes.
I guess it's just an adjustment still.

It can be a bit intimidating. Its the kind of experience that can take you out of your comfort zone. My campus had a really cool atmosphere with all the gothic architecture and what not. I always loved hanging around there. I also miss the academic scene. But now I may not even enjoy that as much. When I was in my early twenties I was really open and eager to learning as much as I could on as many subjects as possible. I was idealistic and excited to expand my horizons and all that. Now, a decade later, I am cynical, barely care about anything and I want those horizons closed. 😎

Never, because I unfortunate have always been stuck working for companies that'd just shut down the store if the workers there went to strike for better pay. I'm so sorry this is affecting your education, especially a crucial one like college. I hope it all works out. If this drags, you probably should at least consider transferring to somewhere less volatile.

I haven't received any internal emails about it, but it's on the news. I'm pretty unimpressed overall, but I'm married to my degree prospects (and hate the school for making me so, in a way) so unless they boot me out or make me re-enroll or any crazy thing like that then I'm there to stay. The sooner I get out, the better, but for the record, I feel that about school no matter where I go. I'm 38 and lucky that most people in my class are doing post-degree work or are mature students, so there's not as high a ratio of people right out of high school as other programs. Ultimately I intend to do a Masters and for that, I'll likely go somewhere else. Future's not set in stone though, so we'll see.

If the staff had to take drastic action like that, the university probably isn't that great for a lot of reasons.

One of my professors noted in a video that the university has been down this road before and has experience with contingency plans and backups, and that this was "both the good news and the bad news". I think that phrase nailed it.
