In the movie The Dark Knight (2008), Heath Ledger's Joker tells two different origins of how he got his scars. Now, this thread isn't about debating which one was 'true' (personally, I'd wager that neither was), nor is it even about which scene you preferred regarding the acting/performances or anything like that. I'm strictly asking which story did you like better of these two... Story 1: "Do you wanna know how I got these scars? My father was a drinker...and a fiend. And one night, he goes off crazier than usual. Mommy gets the kitchen knife to defend herself. He doesn't like that. Not. One. Bit. So, me watching, he takes the knife to her, laughing while he does it. He turns to me, and he says, "Why so serious?". He comes at me with the knife, "Why so serious?". He sticks the blade in my mouth, "Let's put a smile on that face!". And...why so serious?" Story 2: "Well, you look nervous. Is it the scars? Do you wanna know how I got them? C'mere...hey, look at me. So I had a wife. Beautiful, like you, who tells me I worry too much; who tells me I oughta smile more, who gambles and gets in deep with the sharks. Hey...one day they carve her face. We have no money for surgeries; she can't take it. I just want to see her smile again. Hm? I just want her to know that I don't care about the scars! So, I stick a razor in my mouth and do this to myself. And you know what? She can't stand the sight of me! She leaves. Now I see the funny side. Now I'm always smiling!" Personally, I thought Story #2 was the much more 'tragic' one. Plus, it showed that the Joker was already unhinged - if he were willing to cut his own mouth with a razor in order to make his wife feel better.

The first one has the really iconic lines of WHY SO SERIOUS and LETS PUT A SMILE ON THAT FACE. So I’ll go with that.
On a related note, I admit I was initially a bit disappointed that these were “quotes” (albeit, fake quotes) from his father. I still kinda think they’d be a bit cooler if he had said them without the context of the story. But part of that is expectations from watching the trailers a hundred times not knowing that context.
Also, I still wonder what story he would’ve told Batman at the end. I always got the feeling he would’ve actually shared the real story with him.

Hello!
I voted for the first one. The first story I think makes Joker out to be a victim. The second story had me thinking okay, start from the beginning; you're married? I kid. I like the second story for the same reason as you. It shows that Joker's already unhinged. What do you do a guy who'd do that to himself? It almost makes violence against him moot. He's already outdone almost anything that can be done to him if he did that to himself.
It's hard to divorce the contexts. I like the first story more, but I like the overall situation of the second story because I think it's more tailored to Rachel Dawes than the dad story is to the gangster. I would also wager neither are true, and the second story is the better sample of this by being what it needs to be because it compares Dawes to his wife with the blade practically in her mouth. I think the second story is the better mind game.

Second one definitely. More creative and shows how warped the Joker is

1 is basically confirmed when he says "I hated my father!"
