The project was first announced in 2015, but it has been revealed that Tasha Huo, the showrunner of Netflix's upcoming Tomb Raider animated series, will be writing the film.

This is a product that could easily turn to cheese with live action. It’s really hard to ignore the goofier elements, especially the further along the story goes. The idea of a live action Orichimaru is a little terrifying tho.

To me, this could easily turn into a Dragonball Evolution situation where they try to cram as much of the franchise lore as possible and still do it badly.

There’s a few big hurdles but one for sure is the pacing differences. The anime allowed for a natural gradient character progression not just for Naruto, but for many of his peers as well. Showing that growth without it feeling forced or rushed is going to be key for me. But there’s also a question of what the plot will be. I feel like it almost has to be the Konoha Crush storyline because I doubt they’d consider there enough meat on the Land of Waves storyline. But that also means we’re jumping right into the Chunin exams. The tournament could be its own movie in itself. Maybe that’s the answer. Chunin tournament on the surface with Orochimarus takeover story in the background until it surfaces as the main plot in act 3. That’s probably the best of both worlds because I think this movie will need Orochimaru. But also I want it to have Zabuza as he remained one of my favorite characters through my entire viewing of Naruto and Shippuden. This is why I don’t write screenplays.
