Copy/Pasted from a thread I made on v2…
Saw a few rumors about the BIG CAMEOS in Secret Wars, along with about a billion Reddit posts with people FANBOYYING OUT. My reaction was a little different. I see the cameo thing getting old fast so I thought I’d share some thoughts on VARIANTS…
In Dr Strange’s Mom we see VARIANTS of Strange, all still played by Cumberbatch, who commit or have committed dark actions: one tried to kill America, another used the Darkhold to obtain Christine, while yet another used the Darkhold to stop Thanos and ended up destroying a universe. All of this serves the story because it shows us what our prime Strange may be capable of. When he does indeed use the Darkhold Christine remarks “You Stranges are all the same!” This line has weight because of the VARIANTS.
In the same movie we see Captain Carter and WhatsHerName as Captain Marbles. Both are played by actresses we know from the MCU and based on knowledge from past MCU films we can easily surmise how they became these heroes in a “what if?” scenario. Cameos like this are fun and can be introduced organically, but without anyone there to interact with them they feel a bit pointless. Strange doesn’t care about who they are. If say, Sam or Bucky or Carol were there it would have more meaning. In Secret Wars these types of cameos could be great fun, but probably won’t serve the story very much.
Then there’s the LEGACY VARIANTS. The Patrick Stewarts, the HugeAckmans, the TOBEY TOBERMANS. No Way Home is a really fun movie, but at the end of day it’s a gimmick. The fan service is fun, but ultimately kind of flimsy. Past Spidermen do serve the story as they act as mentors to prime Peter. But the thrill is based on the meta knowledge of past franchises and nostalgia. As a huge fan of Stewart’s Xavier I should have been giddy to see him in Dr Strange’s Mom. Instead I was left wondering why we wasted valuable screen time on blatant fan service that doesn’t serve the current story. If HUGEACKMAN is going to shake hands with TOBERMAN in SUPER SECRET WARS it will likely get a gigantic cheer from packed theaters. But will those cheers be earned? Will it serve the story? Will it have the thematic weight of characters we know in this MCU universe paying off actual story arcs? I wonder.

i was very excited about the multiverse stuff ( i even wanted to see batfleck daredevil again )
but SM3 showed me that it was just a pointless gimmick
so now i don't care anymore

To be fair…I think a ton of this kind of hype is fan created. People hypothesizing about bringing characters in from this that and the other. I don’t mind these cameos at all but they are best left at exactly that I think, cameos.
Unless they’re going to be brought in for a longer spell and have actual storylines in the McU.

I'd rather talk about SCARY ANTS... Or VARIOUS PANTS. But anyway, here goes... I didn't mind the cameos from Doctor Strange in the MoM...but if that's all variants are going to be used for going forward, it will seem like just a gimmick. I think variants could be used to solve the problem of recasting characters when actors no longer wish to portray them anymore. Just have new actors play a variant of a character and problem solved. I think I'll wait to see how variants are used in Phase 5 of the MCU before passing final judgement on them as a whole.

Yeah that was my fear from the get go.
I admitt I was swept away by nostalgia when I saw NWH the first time and gave it a good review. However upon rewatch the movie fell flat on its ass. Ita easily the worst Spider-man movie (Yes I rate TASM2 higher than NWH) .
The cameos in MoM served a purpose in the way that it showed an alternative history for that Universe. But... it didnt do anything special for me. The gimmick got real old real quick. And I actually fear Secret Wars. Rumors of the return of RDJ's Tony Stark make me want to vommit. Not that I hate the character but his arc was done. Bringing him back is just for the cheers but to me it cant serve any purpose besides his pay check.
I have the feeling when Phase 6 is done and dusted and we look back on the Multiverse Saga we will not look back kindly.

I don't have any strong feelings either way regarding the rumored Secret Wars cameos. It all depends on the execution and, more critically, if they can keep the cameos… well… a secret. If I hear major leaks in advance of the film, that will ruin the experience for me, and I'll be less likely to feel any urgency to see the movie on opening night.
As excited as I am for the upcoming Avengers movies, Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars are set to retread two ideas we've already been exposed to in the MCU; time travel and the multiverse. Unless they can shake up these concepts, they may seem stale by the time we get to opening night.
I've seen and participated in the discussions on Reddit, and people there are failing to take one critical point into consideration. The title Secrets Wars may be a misnomer. Age of Ultron was reappropriated from the source material for the second Avengers movie, but other than sharing a villain, the two works had nothing to do with each other. Secret Wars may have little to do with variants running rampant in the multiverse.
Marvel Studios will have to push the genre forward in the upcoming Avengers films. I'm confident that they can and will.
I liked NWH well enough; I went in knowing it relied heavily on a one-off gimmick. I'm okay with variants in general, but I have no genuine interest in seeing variants based on characters from legacy Marvel movies - Wesley Snipes' Blade might be the exception to this rule.

I forgot about the 4th type of variant. The John Kransinki variant. At the time I was happy to see him because I assumed he would be prime Reed too. Now it’s pretty clear he was only a nod to an internet fan cast. And I just don’t get it. Are we going to get more of that? Emily Blunt as Widow? Tom Cruise as Stark. Other cameos that are more about the real life actor and a meta reference to alternate castings? This would be the most pointlessly gimmicky thing I have ever seen.

Given Krasinski's almost overwhelmingly negative response, actors who've been fan-cast are far less likely to want to participate in meta-themed cameos. Why lose the role based on what is effectively a fan-sponsored audition when you could have landed it the traditional way and secured a multi-film deal instead? MCU Fans Rip Apart John Krasinski's Short-Lived Fantastic 4 Role screenrant.com/doctor-strange-2-mr-fantastic-john-krasinski-reactions/Fans - and actors, for that matter - should leave the casting to the experts. Aside from one notable exception, Marvel is exceptionally good at casting.

Aside from one notable exception, Marvel is exceptionally good at casting. Marvel casting directors are unsung heroes of the franchise. Their choices are almost always perfect. I feel bad for Krasinki though because he wasn’t exactly given the best material. His dialogue is exposition heavy, dead serious and does not allow for an ounce of charm to shine through. He also probably shot it all alone in a booth which probably didn’t help.

I say get all the variant and multiverse stuff out of their system with this Saga and don't touch it again for whatever they have planned for the next Saga.
This is a once in a lifetime chance for them to do something like this, so I'm fine with them going all nuts with Secret Wars.

I think the newest booster protects against RDJ variants
