Someone shield this man before the cultist gets him! “From a slightly sort of more cynical standpoint, this is a business,” he continued. “It’s an industry. And if you make a couple of great Marvel movies, the instinct is, ‘We need to make more Marvel movies, and we need to expand this.’ And I have this sort of interior feeling of like, ‘Wow, I wish they made less because it would make each one that came out a little bit more special. But I watch all of them…People don’t want things to end. I do.” variety.com/2022/film/news/damon-lindelof-marvel-movies-make-less-films-1235339049/

Did the 17 previous films make Infinity War or Endgame less special? I don't think so. It's not about frequency so much as building a story to a payoff. Fewer films don't automatically make them better.

I don't really have an opinion on this argument. I'm fine if Marvel stays the course or slows down.

If anything we need more content. I can’t believe it took until Phase Four to get a Baby Groot show. Thank Jesus for DisneyPlus.

And restaurants should only serve one dish so it’s more special. And Nike should only make one pair of shoes so it’s more special. And there should only be one comedian so they’re more special. I’m amused that this far in some people seem not to have gotten the concept that this isn’t just another film franchise. It’s the single largest living breathing fictional world ever captured on film. Wanting less of it is the opposite of the entire point.

Someone give this man a cookie. I hope he includes his life in that statement, because, "I do."

That's just Lindelof playing the part of the cool contrarian who doesn't follow popular wisdom and has disdain for the capitalist pursuits that power his bank account. He's not bringing anything original or insightful to the conversation. Marvel could reduce its output, which it is doing, but establishing a baseline of "consistently good" would be better than reducing the franchise's output to nil or close to it. I would be okay with a few classics popping up amongst consistently "good" output. Contrary to popular opinion, I believe that the instinct to increase output was a good one; it was the execution that tripped them up. Kevin Feige and comic book fans come from a culture of consistent monthly output. That would not be easy to approximate in live-action, but putting out two high-quality films and two high-quality streaming shows per year should have been doable.

A shared universe makes it hard to see anything as special because the fantastic is mundane and common place in that universe. Stakes aren't as high-especially when you have time travel and alternate dimensions.
The idea of enjoying a single movie isn't the aim of a shared universe. It's more often a placeholder for events that they want to introduce later.

That would not be easy to approximate in live-action, but putting out two high-quality films and two high-quality streaming shows per year should have been doable. Lets kick his ass. You hold him I'll hit him. I understand what he's saying, but there's a component to grandiose efforts that reward my senses and my mind. My impression is that the core of his argument is less is more, and I feel that more often than not as well, but I also like big, far-reaching projects that aim for the stars and are lucky enough to hit. Suffice to say, sometimes more is more. The MCU especially made use of more is more because it can't tell the story it chose to tell in just a few mediums. It's not a short story. I'm not very in tune with what came after Spiderman: Far From Home (the epilogue/post-credit scene, in my opinion, to the story of the first 3 phases), but what preceded the end of the first 3 phases was no short journey either. It took time, in my opinion, to explore and built up to what I can best describe as a double-turn between Captain America and Iron Man. It reminds me of a wrestling match, say Bret Hart vs Stone Cold Steve Austin at Wrestlemania XIII, where they worked a switch and the face turned heel and the heel turned face. It's not the most sophisticated comparison, but it's how I best know to analogize a role-swap between moral positions wherein Iron Man became the conformist and the voice of regulation and Rogers became the anti-establishment one. This turns need build-up. There is also the Infinity War payoffs that I find delectable like banter between Iron Man and Strange, or Iron Man discovering the Guardians of the Galaxy know Thor. It's a big universe, but it's small in the right ways when big material is managed well. It went big. I would even argue, as has been a mood and theme that I've picked up around here, that breaks are sometimes necessary, and the films will be there regardless. I haven't seen the latest crop of the DCEU movies like Flash, Aquaman 2 and Shazam 2. I've no desire too, but if I feel like watching them in 10 years, they'll be there. I maintain it's not a race. Maybe this Lindelof person feels like the output means he has to stay up to date and cannot take a break, and while I sympathize with those pressures, they are a prison of his making. That's not on us. I don't even know the guy.

If comic book movies are modeled after comic books themselves that run in series, more frequent than less is closer to genre. However, this is what TV is good for. So one to two movies and several series per year seems natural.
