Which of these two films did you prefer? The next poll will be X-Men 2 vs. X-Men: Days of Future Past (once I've rewatched/reviewed it).

Slight edge to XMen. It feels like a tighter story.

Also I’ve rewatched Days of Future Past but haven’t had time to put it on the film thread properly. Maybe in like 9 hours.

XMen 2000 is an absolute benchmark in the genre and still holds up as the serious largely character driven and complex plot style I’d love to see with these films. X2 excelled at that as well. I never got what struck people about First Class. It’s certainly a good film but I get no tingles out of it. Perhaps it was because it just wasn’t my first? Xmen 2000 all the way. Love that film. Hell I’m going to go watch it!!!

Hell I’m going to go watch it!!! I feel pretty much the same as you in regards to the first movie. As for First Class...I think a lot of people (like me) were just so relieved to see an X-Men prequel done well/competently after X-Men Origins: Wolverine failed at that. There are some things in First Class I'm not that fussed (as mentioned in my review for it in the 'What FILMS have you been watching?' thread), as there are with the first film...but I still give the 'edge' to 2000's X-Men for all the reasons you mentioned and because the things I 'disliked' in it are fewer/more minor than the things I disliked in First Class (but I still think that's a really well-done prequel. One of the first/only good ones, imho). Well, I'm watching 'The Rogue Cut' of the film (which I own on Blu-ray), so we'll probably have differing reviews of the movie. hurmmm. The rogue cut? I did not know about this Probably only those who wondered why Rogue was so absent in the 'Theatrical Cut' of the movie would've even known about 'The Rogue Cut'. Being a fan of the character (even the movies' version - which is hardly anything like the comic book or animated series versions), I was particularly interested in getting to see this cut of the movie because I really felt her absence in the theatrical version. While I wouldn't say that it adds anything particularly 'vital' to the movie, for someone like me who never really had TOO much of a problem with Anna Paquin's Rogue, it was good to see her play a part in the film (no matter how small), as it just didn't feel 'right' having her missing from such a major entry in the X-Men movie franchise.

I like both films but if I gotta pick just one I'll go with X-Men.
Despite what some detractors will say, this film helped paved the road for what would eventually become the MCU.
Plus this film gave us two of the best comic book castings: Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier aka Professor X and Ian McKellen as Erik Lehnsherr aka Magneto.
I feel bad for whoever is going to be the next Charles Xavier and Magneto because they have huge shoes to fill.

I'd include Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine in there as a third 'best comic book casting' ever. I reckon he made the role his own just as much as the main players of the MCU have made the roles their own in that franchise. I feel bad for whoever is going to be the next Charles Xavier and Magneto because they have huge shoes to fill. I feel the same way about whoever they next cast as Logan/Wolverine. About the only thing they might have on their side is if the next version is more 'comic book accurate'. But as far as performance goes...it's going to take some seriously great casting to ever live up to Hugh Jackman's performance, imho.

If this contest were between X2 and First Class, X2 would win, but I have to pick First Class by a nose in this setup. It's an extremely close race, though.
Although it bears mentioning that I have always disliked Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique and January Jones is beyond boring in First Class.

X-Men (2000).
First Class I really think is better. It's a tighter movie and breath of fresher air at the time, but X-Men (2000) is more cozy to me. First Class is practically a standalone movie in the franchise. I recall thinking it was a genuine reboot until the Logan cameo.
The really difference between them is I'd recommend First Class to more people, but privately I'll watch X-Men when it's on just cause. First Class I like watching from beginning to end; X-Men I can join and leave any time.
I don't know this for a fact, but I suspect Fassbinder is (or will be) one of those actors who looks down on superhero movies. By the time Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix came around, I thought he was looking bored out of his mind.

Yeah a glass of water was more interesting than Jones..in the comics Frost is an awesome character. Then again wasnt really a fan of hers in Mad Men either. Alison Brie in contrast is like night and day
