I’m sure you guys must have heard this (I heard it too, and I don’t know why I took so long to make a thread about it), but comic book artist Tim Sale passed away in June at the far-too-young age of 66. His collaboration with writer Jeph Loeb gave us Batman: The Long Halloween, Superman for All Seasons, Batman: Dark Victory, Batman: Haunted Knight, and Spider-Man: Blue, all greats. (I remember Loeb and Sale’s Hulk: Gray and Daredevil: Yellow also being good.) His death was a shock to me because just last October he and Loeb published another Long Halloween sequel. I was mixed on it, but Sale’s art was good, and the two of them said in interviews that they wanted to keep working together. One Sale-illustrated Batman story I particularly enjoyed is “Blades,” which is available in the collection Tales of the Batman: Tim Sale. It’s not the trickiest mystery or the best story—writer James Robinson isn’t up to Loeb’s level—but it’s fun, with a villain who ends up being more sympathetic than Bats. And it looks so good. In tribute, here’s a Sale panel, from Dark Victory, that’s one of my favorites of his work:
