Loki’s human avatar has hung up his horns for a while in exchange for a clerical collar. Looks dreamy.

Episode One The setting is the late Victorian era on the Thames estuary on the Essex coast, east of London, where a teen girl goes missing while she and her sister are in the marsh casting a magic spell to ward off a “serpent” several local fishermen claim to have seen. The villagers of Aldwinter are convinced a legendary serpent has returned and they believe this rumored beast is the work of the Devil and someone or thing has put a curse on them. As this happens Cora, a recent widow who is wealthy and interested in studying natural science, arrives from with her peculiar young son to investigate the possibility that a prehistoric plesiosaur might be visiting the estuary from the deep ocean. There she meets Will, the vicar of the local parish, who is caught between the villagers’ superstitions and fears and Cora’s enthusiasm for the creature. He doesn’t believe there is any truth to either wild notion. According to a mutual friend of Cora and Will, he was on track to be a prominent London lawyer, but experienced a religious conversion and joined the church. He lives with his wife and young family near the estuary. As a side plot, a surgeon who treated Cora’s late husband becomes friends with her after his patient’s death. He’s wants to try new surgical techniques, but the Victorian doctors frown upon this. He seeks Cora’s affections. There’s not a lot to pick out from the narrative just yet. As seen in short flashbacks, Cora’s husband tortured her during their marriage, I’m not sure what this has to do with hunting for the serpent. She’s not afraid of it as the people are in Aldwinter, but when she is sitting in a pew with a serpent carved into an arm rest, listening to Will’s sermon, she bursts into tears thinking about the snake like, red hot poker her husband used to burn her with. So, my thoughts are is she there to find a real, but banal creature to stop the horrible memories of the real beast, her dead husband. As for the Rev Will, he’s a cultured, educated man tending an humble, backward flock out in the sticks rather than in a wealthy London suburb. He’s read the same science books of the day as Cora has, but he’s also a believer in what is written in the Bible. Even though he is not superstitious, he’s not convinced of prehistoric creatures that lived millions of years ago either. Evolution and paleontology sciences are still being debated by society and he is, as with Cora and the town, stuck in the middle. His own quiet fear is either Cora or the villagers might be right, but he doesn’t want to find out which. So far, the story clips along creating the setting of gloom and mystery with a lot of gray, winter scenery. Fogs blow in and out; seagulls squawk above. Everyone looks damp. The people fish eels for a living and Cora tells us, they come from the Sargasso Sea to spawn in the marsh. As for Loki connections. As mentioned above, mythical Loki fathered a serpent child, but the Essex Serpent is more associated with the Serpent in the Garden of Eden which Will uncomfortably explains to the missing girl’s sister is an allegory for Satan tempting Eve with sex. If Loki is an agent of chaos and mischief, Will is a man of order and kindness. An historical note, Essex was a hotbed for witch burnings in the 17th century and the Puritans in Salem, MA, originated in Essex.

Episode 2
So far the Essex serpent has not appeared in solid form.
The missing girl is found drowned out in the marsh. This escalates the villagers from suspicion to fear the beast of old is really back. They build a whale net in the harbor and note none of these bad things…just one bad thing, so far…happened before Cora arrived poking around the beach.
She decides to rent a cottage despite hostile neighbors, to study the legend more and Cora’s oddball son takes up with Will’s wife. He’s not close to his mother. Will takes Cora to a beach where the embankment has collapsed due to an earlier earthquake. This event, the villagers believe, released the serpent. There she opens up to him about her abusive marriage.
When Will and Cora are on the beach, they see a boat floating high above the horizon. Amazed at first, they both realize it’s an optional illusion and they enthusiastically research independently to find out it’s explainable as a Fata Morgana. Will tells Cora the enchanted made mundane sadden him and he didn’t understand why. Cora asks if had told his wife this and he’s stricken when he realizes how eager he is to tell Cora this, but not his wife. Will’s oldest daughter, Jo, who friends with the dead girl’s sister, notices his father’s attention to Cora. She also believes the serpent is real and not a silly superstition like he tells her.
To help the villagers understand their fear might have a simple explanation, she lectures the children, including Jo, on what she is studying. As the teacher keeps interrupting Cora’s naturalist answers with points from the Bible, the children begin pointing figures at the dead girl’s sister, chanting “she did it.” Did what, they don’t say. Then they start passing out onto floor.
There is a side plot involving Cora’s companion and her son’s nanny and the brash surgeon helping a young man in London with metal shrapnel in his heart. The surgeon successfully removes it. The nanny is a socialist. I’m not sure what this has to do with the Serpent narrative.
Anyway, the serpent beast is now seeking out the vicar it seems. Rev Will can exercise his intellect with Cora that he can’t with his wife and she has found a compassionate man who does not judge her. We also see cracks in his faith and marriage awakened, like the earthquake open the the beach to the alleged sea monster.
There is one line when Will is explaining to Cora why he became a minister of God rather than a lawyer is he wanted a “purpose” rather than achievement. A “purpose” is Loki’s goal too, though his is “glorious,” while Will’s is more humble.
In Loki lore, Odin punishes the mythical trickster binding him to rocks as a serpent drips venom into his eyes. His pain is so intense, it causes Asgard to quake.

Episode Three After the big freak out at the school which the village blames on Cora, she keeps a low profile in town. Her surgeon friend, Luke, comes from London to cheer her up. He offers some advice about what caused the seeming possession of children. The Rev. Will's daughter Jo has refused to speak since that day and Cora asks Luke to hypnotize her. Under his "spell," she girl confesses she believes she caused the Serpent to appear when she and Noami, the sister of the dead girl, cast a witch's spell out in the marsh to bring back the Naomi's at the time missing sister. Just as she is about the reveal her deepest fears, Will comes in, sees the doctor leaning over his daughter, and slams him against the wall in anger. A dark side of the man of God appears. Before that though, he finds out some fisherman witnessed a dark object swimming under their boat and whatever it was shredded their nets. And while out on the beach the next day, Cora finds a vertebrate fossil of what might be a plesiosaur. The villagers become more convinced Cora is causing the Serpent to attack the village and Will's feelings become more complicated as he falls in love with her and becomes unconvinced the Essex Serpent, or at least the ill-fortune it is bringing the village, isn't real. In frustration at the villagers' stubborn superstitious prejudice at Cora, and to cool himself down, he goes for a nude swim in a marsh lagoon while reciting a prayer...very PG. Not much in the way of Loki connections, though Will does lend Cora his green knit muffler against the cold wind. Will's wife, Stella, notices. This was a fairly dry episode with a lot of exposition. Both Will and Luke are in love with Cora as well is Cora's friend and Frankie's nanny, Martha. She wants more from Cora, but Cora is unable to give Martha what she needs. Will is realizing that as much as he loves, admires, and respects his wife, he is not and never has been in love with her. Cora is his first real love and the serpent is torturing Will's fortitude.
