So I was planning to see this new slasher movie no matter what when it opens this weekend, but I just saw the RT score and it is at 100% after the first 32 reviews. Hopefully, it will be able to keep at least a certified fresh score when it's all said and done.

As a fan of horror I’ve had my eye on this for a bit now. Glad to see it’s getting good reviews. I’ll definitely be checking it out sooner rather than later.

Just got back...got my self a drink of water...lets talk about it.
I really enjoyed this movie. The 70's setting added a nice backdrop. The clothes and cars, what little there were of both, felt appropriate. The characters were all really good. The six protagonists all felt like fully fleshed out character ideas and none of them were so douchey that they weren't likeable. Id even say none of them were actually douchey, although Wayne felt the closest but he's also an aspiring pornography producer in the late 70s so he's bound to feel a little bit scummy. But man was it refreshing to have such a deep cast of characters that had enough nuance to feel like real people. The pop music choices were great (really loved Brittany Snows Landslide) and the musical theme of the movie was this kind of soothing but mostly creepy singing/moaning that was effectively off putting. Also if nudity is your thing you see a fair amount here since the cast is making a porno. Saw Brittanys Snowglobes, Mias Goths, and Scotts Mescudong (and its massive)...as well as everyone else being scantily clad...oh and old lady parts but I tried not to focus too much on those. I also really enjoyed the themes of the film. Theres a lot of great dialog and discussion within the movie and more abstract about sexuality, promiscuity, ambition and growing older. It really added a lot of depth to the movie that I wasn't expecting. To a point I was actually not looking forward to the eventually bloodbath. But bloodbath came either way. Most of the kills were actually tamer than the sex...but still decent enough to give you the picture...and one in particular is the most memorable but that's mostly because of Chekhov and his gun.
There were a few jump scares which usually don't get much credit from me. I'll also say the movie felt its runtime a little bit. I started getting a little ancy toward the end so im sure it wouldve benefited a tad from being cut down a few minutes. The opening police scene probably didn't need to be there for one. I was trying to think of a movie similar to this and I can't quite think of one. I guess it's in the same ballpark as Texas Chainsaw Massacre but it's much more tension than terror, and although its odd it isn't Leatherface or Chop Top levels of odd. I also think the end end scene, which suggests a prequel....actually would kind of take away from some of the themes of age playing a factor in this film. But hey, maybe we'll get another slaughterfest.
Overall a very good slow burning horror flick.
Also funny story...there were only about 5 people in my theatre and one middle aged guy slept through easily half the film snoring fairly loudly and then when it was all over, after the post credit scene even, he sits up and loudly says 'Awesome, that was a good movie!' and it took everything in me not buckle over with laughter.

I agree with you about the characters and how they felt real. I also agree that the music, acting, and dialogue were good. I think the run time was fine. I loved the little details they put in that made it feel like you were watching an actual grind house movie from the 70's. I also love that it made you wait for the bloodbath to begin.

Update: Now 96% certified Fresh with 137 reviews. I read some of the audience reviews and it seems like there are quite a few people that don't realize how much of an homage this movie is. People don't appear to know that this sort of graphic content was quite common in low budget movies from the 70's (and even some big budget movies of the time). Looks like these film makers are introducing a new generation to this kind of schlock.

Looks like these film makers are introducing a new generation to this kind of schlock. The more I think about it and the more homages I realize, or are told, I appreciate the film all that much more. For example, I hadn’t seen Easy Rider but was told there’s an easy rider editing moment and sure enough a quick search for easy rider editing and I know exactly what they’re talking about. I didn’t even think of the Shining moment either until I was looking through images and it hit me. I feel like the next few times I watch this I may leave it with more than I came in with.

Here’s director Martin Scorsese’s take on 'PEARL': “Ti West’s movies have a kind of energy that is so rare these days, powered by a pure, undiluted love for cinema. You feel it in every frame. A prequel to ‘X’ made in a diametrically opposite cinematic register (think 50s Scope color melodramas), ‘Pearl’ makes for a wild, mesmerizing, deeply — and I mean deeply — disturbing 102 minutes. West and his muse and creative partner Mia Goth really know how to toy with their audience … before they plunge the knife into our chests and start twisting. I was enthralled, then disturbed, then so unsettled that I had trouble getting to sleep. But I couldn’t stop watching.” www.darkhorizons.com/scorsese-is-a-big-fan-of-ti-wests-pearl/

I got to say I dug Pearl way more than 'X'. Surprised but not surprised that Mia Goth didn't get a nomination. She was excellent in this.
