I know Sakaar is not a political board., however this affects anyone who loves to read fantasy and science fiction and see the movies based on these books. In 1947, similar moral forces banned and burned thousands of comic books. MAUS is currently being held up as immoral and unfit for teenage readers. If these folks go all the way, they will be telling Marvel, DC, JK Rowling, and others what is morally permissible to be in their books. And if they can get away with that, then they will tell the filmmakers what they can have in their movies. Do not think this is a harmless, one-off bunch of crazies. It always starts off with one group.

I totally agree. This is outrageous. You may not like what is in those books but that doesnt give you the right to burn them. There should be room for all views.

Not sure how I feel about this. It's their right to burn books. Probably extremists right? The comic being banned, fair enough I guess? It is a school

It is a school It’s a person’s right to have sex with his barnyard animals so long as he does it out of sight of decent people. This preacher can burn all the books he wants, but look at the people who are joining in. How many likeminded churches may be inspired to follow. School boards all across America are condemning these books as immoral. What does that say to all the young people who love these books and draw meaning from them? The preacher is burning their love too. Calling it evil. I think the US will have a very conservative government post 2024, not unlike Orban’s Hungary in time. So, the movement’s moral leaders will want their payback to reform America’s code of morality to be more in line with there’s, much like what happened in the 1950s and then some. We know what the template of burning books and works of art that offends leads to. Do not think this will not affect what filmmakers will be permitted to say in their movies. We see how China handles this now. So, I’m saying, don’t look away.

It's like one of those kids thinks, Ive never been to a book burning before. Let's see how this plays out, out of sheer curiosity. Peer pressure or whatever etc. Would others follow? Maybe? No one can predict the future in these uncertain times. I mean look at the Jehovas Witnesses or Mormons and some of their practices. This is not the norm with general Christians What's your source for that statement? That seems rather odd. Also are we talking Maus or Harry Potter/Twilight? Yeah thats what some people seem to be speculating-red wave with the midterms first though. Biden still has time. Also America has had federal election results before, where almost the whole country was red. A few times too if memory serves

Should burn the Bible too. Have you read that thing? It’s got a guy that turns water to wine. Pure witchcraft! That boy Jesus got the devil in him!

Also America has had federal election results before, where almost the whole country was red. A few times too if memory serves I’m not going all the way into the controversy here, but many school boards across the US, public school boards are generally elected officials, some of whom bring their party politics and sometimes their religious faith to their decisions. In some cases these board members have their own kids in private schools. As such, there are several instances when the Christian right members are the majority, making drastic changes to the curriculums and banning from school libraries certain books they deem from their political/religious perspective unfit for students to know about. Please read up on it. I bring this up because this has happened before. And comics were in particular targeted and the industry forced into self-censorship or face being shut down as “pornography.” Stan Lee was the man who broke the Code and brought creative freedom back to Marvel and all comic books.

No idea what people think claiming Potter is evil is supposed to accomplish but they just wind up looking insane BTW he states it’s a “global vision” and these works “must go”. Not sure who’s already aware but I make no secret of being an atheist, and it’s this kind of totalitarian religion that I truly stand against.

Ah, yes, but how does one burn an eBook? I guess you could buy it, delete it from your library and then repeat the process indefinitely.
And kudos to the Maus guy for declaring no movie adaptation will ever be made of his work.

China has successful governors on their web, so any government determined to do it can and will.

It is the intimidation factor, plus the high number of folks not outraged by this is worrying. How many schools and libraries will cave into these moralists just to avoid the above? That is their intention, to cow people into not doing anything that raises the Right's hackles. This is the same thing done in an abusive home. Everyone walks on pies to keep daddy calmed down. I was raised in such a home, and you don't realize the constant pressure and tension one is under to not let things blow up. My dad died when I was young and after the shock of him dying, I was relieved that he was gone for good out of mine and my mother's life. That's no way to live and it took me years to get over the PTSD. He was not a very physically violent man, but the psychological torture was horrid.

You described my mother and her three brothers childhood. I’m sorry you experienced the same but yes and yes. It’s horrible and that’s what this is like. I hope everybody sees it for as obviously psychotic as it is. It’s not even a political thing to me, because It’s not economics/foreign policy/etc. it’s theocracy. “Oh noooo Harry Potter has wizards. This might upset the magic sky fairy and our human sacrifice idol, oh nooooo”.

Aside from the nutjobs and some genuine fascists, I think some on the right feel they are finally pushing back on several decades of changing cultural mores they do not approve of. To people who can’t get passed homosexuality as normal human behavior and not necessarily a damnable sin in others, the slow progress in legalizing homosexuality, gay marriage, transgenders and transsexuals, etc, is upsetting and diminishes their agency, as they see it, as the moral leaders of society. Other things are also changing.

Other things are also changing. Yeah agreed. And I wanted to be clear, I’m not pushing left or right. I feel both have good steps to offer and we need to be working together in what works and what’s fair, and what doesn’t work. It seems all we’re doing now is pushing idealism at the complete expense of what other people. Our way or the highway and both sides are doing it.

I'll see them in 2.29*10^32 years.

It seems all we’re doing now is pushing idealism at the complete expense of what other people. Our way or the highway and both sides are doing it. There’s no pragmatism allowed in ideology, this is what is driving the moral panics at either extreme. However, the politically correct/safe space culture in the Left is not the current threat, but it is driving people up the wall. There is little that can be done politically about it unless free speech and rights are suppressed. And this is the dangerous threat from the Right. They are now actively suppressing free speech in schools. It’s not widespread yet, but it is trending that way along with other things. Rights and laws do not seem to matter to them other than as tools to fight their “enemies” with; it’s more about owning the narrative. And the rest of us are caught in the middle. Like him or not, anyone who thinks Biden is too far right or too far left has no political perspective or understanding. From their POV, they don’t need it, they already know what to do. This isn’t a political battle anymore. I think policy stopped mattering to most otherwise conservatives a while back. It’s now cultural.
