In an interview with Hollywood Reporter, Tom Holland said the following: “You can ask [Martin] Scorsese ‘Would you want to make a Marvel movie?’ But he doesn’t know what it’s like because he’s never made one. I’ve made Marvel movies and I’ve also made movies that have been in the conversation in the world of the Oscars, and the only difference, really, is one is much more expensive than the other. But the way I break down the character, the way the director etches out the arc of the story and characters — it’s all the same, just done on a different scale. So I do think they’re real art.” “When you’re making these films, you know that good or bad, millions of people will see them, whereas when you’re making a small indie film, if it’s not very good no one will watch it, so it comes with different levels of pressure. I mean, you can also ask Benedict Cumberbatch or Robert Downey Jr. or Scarlett Johansson — people who have made the kinds of movies that are ‘Oscar-worthy’ and also made superhero movies — and they will tell you that they’re the same, just on a different scale. And there’s less Spandex in ‘Oscar movies.'” screenrant.com/martin-scorsese-superhero-movies-criticism-tom-holland-response/

Scorsese’s comments barely deserve a response, but the idea that it can’t be art because it’s big scale and because it’s super heroes, is an old school absurd thought he hasn’t gotten over. He looks at the sillier nature of it and that’s all he can see. He can’t the metaphorical weight, the catharsis, the societal reflection, or the genuine connection people derive from specific characters and experiences.

These directors have it backwards. Superheroes are literally saving cinema! You may not like them. And that’s fine. But the Green Goblin that is COVID/streaming threw Gwen Stacy (cinema) off the bridge and Spidey just swung in like a BOSS and saved her with a record breaking box office! KAPOW!

I really wonder what Scorsese thinks watching this unfold. That after all this time not only has the genre not jumped the shark or run its course,,, it’s dominating Hollywood stronger than ever. And there is artistic competition over it. Gunn and Taiki and Jenkins and Coogler and Watts and Reeves and the Russo’s and many more, WANT to put their personality into it. They WANT to instill real heart and soul and meaning and character. They WANT to outdo one another with their vision and to be a part of adding to a collaborative vision as well. And that is art!!!

The whole thing is just so dumb. I could go on about how wrong I think these guys are, but I’ve posted it all so many times before. Popular genres like this have always existed. They don’t ruin cinema and they don’t prevent other types of movies from being made.

He treats it like everybody has to be making and watching richly detailed biographies and nothing else.

All I can glean from Scorsese's remarks is that none of the following would meet his narrow definition of "cinema":
The Wizard of Oz King Kong Indiana Jones Jaws Jurassic Park Star Wars Lord of the Rings etc.
To him all of those would be "amusement park rides". It's idiotic.
