He hinted there may be more than one Megalodon in the sequel. I know there's like four books in the series, but I only read the second one The Trench. I'm not sure how closely Wheatley plans to follow the book(s) if at all.
But that one did have not just a Megalodon (the offspring of the first one) but it had an entire prehistoric ecosystem living in this trench including evolved carnivores called Kronosaurs. I also remember the villain (yeah the book actually bothered with a human antagonist) being really silly, like a discount Bond villain complete with a femme fatale assistant and Russian henchmen. So yeah, even without prehistoric apex predators, this still sounds like a Jason Statham movie.

"By the time I got to 'The Meg,' I'd done a lot of effects work, and I had an inkling of it. And because of the pandemic, I had an extra six or seven months, so I storyboarded the whole thing, every frame of it," Wheatley said in the latest issue of Total Film magazine. "So when we came to start it, there was a massive amount of prep that had been done. I don't like the idea of these tales of people making it up on the day. I wanted every dollar on screen."

Despite negative reviews, it's actually made over $256M worldwide so far.

After crossing the $300M mark worldwide, it's got a VOD release date.
