This is honestly completely unnecessary and it's a obvious cash grabbed by Sony. I wish Naughty Dog would be allowed to do more than just remake and remastered their previous games.
Developer Naughty Dog has officially announced The Last of Us Part II Remastered, a native version for PS5 due to launch in January 2024.
“Whether you’ve already played and even platinumed The Last of Us Part II on the PlayStation 4 console or have recently jumped into The Last of Us Part I on PS5 and want to continue the story, Part II Remastered will offer plenty of reasons for new and returning players to revisit a story that means so much to our studio,” writes Editorial Content Manager Jonathon Dornbush on the PS Blog.
The remastered PS5 version of TLOU Part II will include various improvements, new modes, and behind the scenes features. One of the main new modes is ‘No Return’, a roguelike survival mode in which you'll face randomised encounters, making each playthrough a “fresh experience”. No Return includes a range of playable characters, each with their own traits. As you progress, you'll be able to unlock new characters, skins, and more, while competing for a spot on the global leaderboard.
Additionally, there will be a new Guitar Free Play mode, so you can freely enjoy a selection of unlockable instruments, using FX pedals to modulate your performance, while playing as different characters in various locations. A new set of Lost Levels will also enable you to play sequences previously cut from the game - not all of these are finished levels, but early development “slices”, featuring developer commentary.
Campaign cutscenes will also feature director's commentary from director Neil Druckmann, narrative lead Halley Gross, and actors Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson, and Laura Bailey. As for those technological improvements, The Last of Us Part II Remastered includes native 4K resolution in Fidelity Mode, upscaled 1440p resolution in Performance Mode, and an Unlocked Framerate setting for VRR displays.
Improved texture resolution, increased Level-of-Detail distances, improved shadow quality, animation sampling rate, and other enhancements also feature, alongside support for the DualSense controller's haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. All of the accessibility features from the original release, the unlockable Speedrun Mode, and bonus skins will also be included, as will Photo Mode with a few new additions.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered will be coming to PlayStation 5 on 19th January 2024, with pre-orders due to go live on 5th December. A standard edition will be available alongside a W.L.F. Edition available in selected markets, bundling a steelbook copy of the game with four enamel pins, a Washington Liberation Front Patch, and 47 ‘Society of Champions’ trading cards.
For existing owners of the PS4 version of The Last of Us Part II, you'll also be able to upgrade to The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PS5 for $10, with the ability to import you save data.
