Even though I too make fun of the 'Martha line', I never actually had as big of a problem with it as everyone else seemed to as I think I viewed it slightly differently to everyone else. While others think Batman stopped wanting to kill Superman simply because 'their mothers have the same name', I took it as Batman finally realising Superman was 'human' inside like Bruce was, he cared for his mother and wasn't just some alien who didn't care about humanity/wanted to invade Earth.
I think that while Clark's mother's name being the same as Bruce's was what gave Bruce pause, if Clark had said "Save my mother!" instead that too may have also stopped Bruce in his tracks. It was about showing Superman's humanity and love for his mother that was what got through to Bruce, I think. Anyway, that's just my interpretation.
