Joe Barton previously created and wrote the BBC Two/Netflix drama series “Giri/Haji.” He also previously wrote the feature film “The Ritual.” Most recently he co-wrote the upcoming feature film “Invasion” starring Riz Ahmed and Octavia Spencer, which will be distributed by Amazon Studios. He is also set to write and executive produce the Netflix drama series “Half Bad,” based on the books by Sally Green. variety.com/2021/tv/news/gotham-pd-series-hbo-max-showrunner-joe-barton-1234882681/

I wish the Gotham showrunner could helm this Did that really get better? I bailed on it in the first season. After that one episode with the balloon killer... I personally struggled with the first season of the show too. I just found it rather boring. However, the beginning of Season 2 got a bit more interesting. It also got a whole lot more WTF-worthy. I really started getting into the show by Season 3 (I had to buy Seasons 3-5 on Blu-ray because the channel which aired the first two seasons on TV here stopped after Season 2). I got WAY behind with the show and didn't even finish watching it until it had already aired its series final in America. Anyway, it did feel a bit like they threw everything at the wall to see what stuck, but it was also kind of enjoyable in how weird it got. It was a crazy ride. It's one of the only shows I can think of where I've preferred the later seasons to the earlier ones (though Season 5 was somewhat of a letdown after Season 4, I thought). On the whole, I'd say that it did 'get better' (then again, we might have different definitions of 'better').

Although to be fair it is Gotham after all, which spawned supervillains such as Joker, Riddler, Freeze etc. The final season was underwhelming which was unfortunate. The final Joker...sheesh... Thoughts on Ra's?

Gotham is great television and a great version of the insanity that is Gotham City.

Thoughts on Ra's? My thoughts on Ra's al Ghul (copied & pasted from my review for Season 4 that I posted on another forum after watching it on Bu-ray): **spoilers below** This dude wasn't all he was cracked up to be, I felt. While I have liked Alexander Siddig in other things, he didn't particularly impress me here as Ra's. Sure, the show pronounced the character's name the way I'm sure a lot of comic book fans have been saying shows/movies should have been pronouncing it for ages, and they got someone physically closer to the comic book version...but I think I actually preferred Matt Nable's more laid-back version of Ra's in Arrow (unpopular opinion, I know). For all his threatening and acting sinister and whatnot, I never felt this Ra's was actually in any way 'intimidating'. He seemed to do a lot of talking, then his master plan was revealed to be...he wanted Bruce to kill him. Which he did. Then he was gone for a long time (seriously, Alexander Siddig must've had the record having his name appear in the most episodes he actually wasn't in), only to be brought back AGAIN and this time not wanting to die (for some reason), but Barbara awesomely used Bruce to kill him again (this time seemingly fore realsies, if his turning into ash was any indication). He just felt like a big ol' disappointment for a character that was built up as so 'badass' or whatever. I still like Liam Neeson's movie version the best. No, he mightn't have had the Lazarus Pit and been ancient, but he at least felt like a worthy villain for Batman. This version? Not so much. As for the final Joker (copied & pasted from my review of Season 5 that I posted on another forum after watching it on Bu-ray): **spoilers below** Speaking of Jeremiah...I continued to be unimpressed with him when compared to Jerome. I just found this new version boring. The best thing involving his character was when Selina stabbed him REPEATEDLY (which was cheer-worthy, as I'd been exclaiming to the TV, "Stab him again! And again! Keep stabbing him!"). Even his plans were boring. I knew from the episode that ended with Jeremiah and two people that they’d been made to look like Bruce’s parents, his green gas was dull in comparison to Jerome purple laughing gas, and his sudden twisted 'love' for Bruce felt like it was just piggybacking on Jerome's obsession with Bruce. Jeremiah falling into the vat o’ chemicals, still being alive, but supposedly 'braindead'/no longer a threat' just made me go "HA!" at Bruce when he said that. Doesn't he know what city he was living in? They're not dead until you cut off their heads, burn their bodies to ashes, seal the ashes in concrete and bury them at the ends of the earth! Silly Bruce, he should've just let Selina off the jerkwad as he lay in the hospital bed. Cameron Monaghan was really good as Jerome, but I didn't like his Jeremiah. I liked Jeremiah's look as the Joker (not that they were actually allowed to call him that in the show, nor were they allowed to have him with green hair, apparently) even less. He kind of looked like a paler version of Igor from the Hugh Jackman Van Helsing movie. I know Joker is supposed to get 'scarred' from the chemicals, but this felt like too much. It also amuses me somewhat to read that some people thought Batman had offed the Joker/Jeremiah in the final episode. HA! As if. People just don't die that easily in this show.

Seems right up my alley Read the whole series. It's pretty damn good. Think Indiana Jones with a bit of Jack Sparrow but it takes place during the Napoleonic Wars. So there's some cues taken from the Sharpe series too.

The end old Joker was pathetic...c'mon seriously guys...dropped the ball so hard, it fell straight to Hell lol

I never watched Gotham. I planned on watching it eventually. I doubt I ever will at this point.

“You start to see the story through the point-of-view of these corrupt cops. And one in particular. The story is actually a battle for his soul. He’s a cop over generations and the history of corruption in Gotham is enormous and goes back many years. As you realize there’s this myth-building in the background, you are in a new place with these characters, some of whom will touch on that you may have seen from the comics and others totally new,” Reeves explained. “You can go down this avenue and go into detail that you couldn’t go into in the movie and go into these rich places and meet these characters Terrence is going to create.”
