I’m contractually bound to include a post about the Sleuth singer mystery on every board I’m on. Sorry, I don’t want to do it, but rules are rules are rules, and if I started making exceptions for this one, I’d have to make exceptions for every one… (I hate that phrase, by the way. For one thing, it’s not true.) So: In the fairly famous movie Sleuth (1972), starring Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine, Olivier’s character listens to three Cole Porter songs on the radio. You can watch the clip of the scene in question here: No one on earth seems to know who the singer is. According to every expert I’ve e-mailed, the songs aren’t from a genuine ’30s recording; they were probably recorded exclusively for the movie by someone trying to sound like an Al Bowlly-esque ’30s singer. Someone who worked in Sleuth’s sound department, Graham V. Hartstone, told me he can’t remember who the singer was. The company that produced the movie (Palomar Pictures) has since gone under. BUT! We recently had a promising lead, as I reported on v2.0. Music exec and amateur singer Don Percival (his obituary here) sang a faux-’30s song, “One More Kiss, Dear,” for Blade Runner (1982). Here’s that:
BR’s re-recording work was done at the same studio at which Sleuth was partly filmed, and both had Hartstone as a mixer. BR was distributed by Warner Bros., while Sleuth was distributed by Fox—but even that supports the idea of Percival being the singer, because the Porter songs in Sleuth were “by arrangement with Warner Bros. Publishing” (according to the credits and to IMDb). Most importantly, Percival sounds like the Sleuth singer, at least to my ears. I also messaged with a musicologist online who said he thought both were the same singer. So there’s the mystery, as it stands now. What say ye, ladies and gentlemen of the Sarkaarian jury?

maybe it was Marc Singer? Is he a singer (in addition to a Singer)? Wikipedia just shows him as an actor.
