Today I watched an excellent Tom Snyder interview with lyricist Yip Harburg. And, Lord, it just made me want to track down and listen to even more Harburg songs. (Many—what he wrote for The Wizard of Oz, “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?,” “April in Paris,” “It’s Only a Paper Moon,” “Old Devil Moon”—are deservedly famous, but several can only be found on infrequently-revived musicals’ cast albums.) He was the greatest lyricist ever—bar none. Lorenz Hart and Carolyn Leigh came close, but Yip was just a genius. He had a poet’s emotionalism, intellectual depth, and philosophy but was able to put those qualities into just a few, direct, well-chosen words. When Yip was working with brilliant composers such as Harold Arlen and Burton Lane, we ended up with some of the greatest songs ever written. When he was working with a lesser composer such as Sammy Fain, we still got songs like this:

By the way, Kate Baldwin’s Let’s See What Happens album, from which I posted “Here’s to Your Illusions” above, is fantastic. She has a gorgeous voice (I’d listened to her previously on the excellent cast album for Finian’s Rainbow), and what songs she chose! All Yip Harburg, the greatest lyricist in the history of forever, and Burton Lane, a brilliant, inventive Broadway composer—sometimes in tandem, sometimes with different songwriting partners. Lots of rarities, beautifully sung. Just great.

Sounds pretty good. I’ve never heard of these guys but I dig their style Yeah, Inlet is Hum's first album in over two decades, and it's incredible. These guys mix pop, metal, prog, and shoegaze into this sort of sci-fi space rock thing - very rad. You'll never feel more untethered and yet so grounded listening to anything else. Check out Downward Is Heavenward if you like these tunes. And, if you are so inclined, consider listening to the album on streaming once or twice or even purchasing it to support the artist - thanks.

There's a lot of good 90's bands that flew under the radar for me because at the time I was more into the metal scene. But there is good stuff out there that I ended up appreciating later in life. This has a nice mix of styles that I can appreciate.

I never actually had any of their albums but have seen them live many times over the years on festivals and they were the opening band on a bunch of shows I was at. I guess it's time I finally purchased something of their's.

Start with Earth Rocker...
