Probably, um, not the most popular kind of music, but I was listening to Gilbert and Sullivan cast recordings last night. Ruddigore’s pretty great, and underrated.
Um. Yes.

The beautiful voice of singer-turned-actress Myra Molloy, who I became aware of when watching Season 2 of the TV series Halfworlds (where she played the character who ended up being my favourite).

Cast album for the 1996 revival of Once Upon a Mattress. I’ve never seen the show, but the songs are great.
The composer is Mary Rodgers (Richard’s daughter, Adam Guettel’s mother), and it’s too bad that she didn’t use her musical talents more: OUaM was her only hit show, but I like her music a lot. It’s much less pretentious than her son’s—and, OK, she didn’t have her dad’s remarkable skill for melody, but then again who does? (I’ve seen Dick Rodgers mentioned even on classical music forums as one of the greatest melodists ever.) Curiously, her music sounds like her father’s when he was working with Lorenz Hart in the ’20s and ’30s, not like when he was working with Oscar Hammerstein in the ’40s and ’50s, even though she came of age when her dad was working with Hammerstein. I wonder if that’s intentional: when Richard Rodgers composed his first show after Hammerstein’s death, he went back to Hart-era-sounding music, and I’m wondering if his daughter also preferred that style.
Either way, the early-Rodgers-esque music is matched by Marshall Barer’s Lorenz-Hart-ian lyrics. Barer is one of the greatest (often literally) unsung lyricists ever, a rhyme-drunk impeccable craftsman whose lyrics rivaled those of Hart (his idol) and Harburg. What makes Barer great is that, despite how many trick rhymes, internal rhymes, multiple rhymes, half-rhymes, and every other kind of rhyme you can think of he puts into his lyrics, those lyrics are always singable. Just look at his work on “Normandy”:We don’t have lyricists of that caliber actively working anymore, alas, and our songs are the poorer for it.

That score is great. I also like the song called 'Push it to the limit' in that movie, at least thats what I think it's called
