Netflix has released a new early teaser for their “Jupiter’s Legacy” series, this one showing off some first look shots at this series adaptation of Mark Millar and Frank Quitely’s comic.
The multigenerational drama follows the world’s first generation of superheroes who received their powers in the 1930s. In the present day, they’re the revered elder guard, but their superpowered children struggle to live up to the legendary feats of their parents.
Josh Duhamel, Leslie Bibb, Ben Daniels, Elena Kampouris, Andrew Horton, Mike Wade and Matt Lanter star in the series created and executive produced by Steven S. DeKnight while Sang Kyu Kim serves as showrunner.
“Jupiter’s Legacy” is scheduled to debut on May 7th.

I honestly do not understand why anyone bothers with Netflix shows. They always get cancelled after season 1 or 2. What’s the point of getting invested?

Renewing shows doesnt. But not renewing shows hardly costs them subs. Thats why they keep investing in new shows and dont care for their runniong shows. Its all about the money.

I was reading about their strategy not too long ago. Another part of that is that once shows get successful the crew naturally demands a new contract with more money and Netflix won’t pay. I just think it’s insane. Imagine HBO cancelling Game of Thrones once it got successful or NBC cancelling Seinfeld in season three. It’s just another reason why I honestly think streaming is destroying what was briefly the golden age of television. How many shows on any service have gone beyond season three? Even the insanely popular ones like Daredevil get cancelled.

Further, they do extend seasons for some shows that have been canceled by other platforms. For example Lucifer Dd was a different scenario. All the netflix marvel shows were canceled

They have a business model where they are constantly in massive debt but their success allows them to keep borrowing/spending money. I’m not even close to being an economics guy so I can’t say whether or not it’s brilliant or stupid. But I’ve read recently that what they’re doing is unsustainable. What perplexes me is why exactly people care about their shows that are almost always doomed no matter their quality. Not to repeat myself but imagine if NBC or HBO used that model in the last few decades.

For Netflix, the math is simple; a longer-running show won't lead to new subscribers. In 2020, Netflix canceled 18 original series. Of those, 14 had only one season. I ended my paid Netflix subscription at the beginning of the year. I maintain a profile on another account but, I rarely use it. Soon, Netflix and the rest of the big streamers are going to end multi-tenancy accounts. It will then be one person to one account, and that will be the final nail in their coffin for me. The problem is that Netflix doesn't believe in fandom; it's not a part of their company culture. They still think like a technology company (that has no unique technology to offer anymore). Their talent pool doesn't see them as a studio either. They see Netflix as a piggy bank to raid and then go back to one of the "real" studios for longer-term projects. As an investor, I am fairly close to dumping my stake in the company. The street keeps saying that Netflix is the future. But how, exactly? How many subscribers can they acquire --- and MAINTAIN? Everlasting subscriber growth is an unsustainable fairytale. Surely they must be close to attaining their total addressable market (TAM). The blind panhandler in a developing country will not be an option no matter how deeply you discount the first three months.

I would add also that they no longer offer a deep catalogue of other network’s shows. NBC, Disney, Paramount and others are rapidly taking back their IPs. Netflix is flat out doomed. If I owned stock I would bail now. In other words, ITS A TRAP!

Factor in increased competition, pricey cost increases, and treating 4K as a pay-to-play add-on, and you've got a recipe for total extinction. Honestly, I keep thinking with all that money, they must be developing something in the member service arena that will be a game-changer, but it never comes. I mean, what if they added low-latency gaming or music streaming? What if they expanded to include user-contributed content? Virtual reality or some shit... But all they've given us is fast-forward playback.

Microsoft is their only real competition in this space (but that's serious competition). I didn't watch the whole video, but John seems negative or at least confused by this development. For someone who can spin up movie speculation in milliseconds, he seems bereft of theories here. He's clearly not thinking three-dimensionally. Imagine that you've just watched a hit movie on Netflix, and you loved it. They haven't produced another season, or the inevitable sequel is still in the works. As the credits creep by, you're suddenly invited to play the video game based on the same IP (or even stream the music from the movie). It's an insidious way to keep people engaged on the platform and add new subscribers as well. This is only the beginning; I think Netflix will try and stream any and everything they can to us - and it just might work. The darker future of human eyeballs glued to an endless vault of passive and interactive entertainment is coming.

During the entirety of the vid he does go on to say it could be very beneficial to Netflix too but yes you're right it was negative near the beginning. Im just concerned about more monopolies forming. Also is the US govt doing its job in that arena? I mean Disney buying Fox tv/movie division. Warner-Discovery merger (and AT&T buying Warner in the first place). Amazon buying Metro? Apple looking at A24 is the latest
