I love this holiday! I love the carnivals (which I can't go to this year), the fireworks (which I can't go to this year), the music (which I have to listen to at home this year), and getting together with family (which I can't do this year), and raising the colors outside the apartment (which I'm terrified to do thanks to rioters and looters this year). Happy Crappy Independence Day 2020!
Odd that we don't do anything on August 2 that's patriotically festive, though, because that's when the Declaration of Independence was actually fully signed. And the war actually ended in October, so it's odd we don't have anything to dedicated to that.

Then you're allowed to go out and gather in groups. It's true. Covid actively avoids protesters. It only attacks people in restaurants, bars, churches, office buildings, beaches, water parks, concerts, Memorial Day events, and Trump rallies.

I remember not too long ago you were trying to convince me that Covid was less deadly than the flu!

I remember not too long ago you were trying to convince me that Covid was less deadly than the flu! I haven't been isolating, not completely. They're just not doing those things in Chicago this year. As long as you wash your hands, use disinfectants, and be smart about how you go out, you're fine. I've been to work, seen friends and family many times, gone outside and exercised, and nobody's caught anything in almost 100 days now. I just avoid gatherings of 10 or more while being sanitary like you're supposed to. Too bad the moron who runs Illinois didn't get that memo. The main reason COVID-19 has been as bad as it is come July is because people are stupid and have continually done things that make it spike over and over again. I'm careful. I'm mindful of where I've put my hands, Wash or disinfect frequently when I go out, clean off surfaces around the apartment after each trip, avoid crowds as much as I can, and so on. It's extra effort, but it works. Almost a hundred days of this and I've gone uninfected without losing complete contact with my loved ones.

But I stayed away from my parents since I work in a dangerous place.

I won't see my older relatives for their sake. And I won't see my irresponsible relatives for my sake. Glad to hear you're being responsible about it though. I had to go to Home Depot last week and it really pissed me off because so many people were mask-less, including several employees. If I get sick I'm gonna go back there and punch somebody. If everyone actually took the proper precautions we'd be over this already.

And even if they wanted to take the risk themselves they may well have indirectly killed others by helping the virus spread.

Still have some doubts though Yup exactly Raptor, people need to grow up. We all have so much to be grateful for living in a Western world. No, you dont need to dance on top of the bar counter or be at the beach. For chrissakes... Suck it up buttercup. I dont care if you're 'human', we all are

Happy Independence Day, or uppity colonists day, depending on perspective.

The irony of tossing a COVID conversation into the Independence Day thread when the subject isn't open to a free exchange of ideas is either hilarious or tragic. To be fair, that convo was a year ago. Not that it matters because it is still an issue.

I do hate those jerks that set off fireworks at 3am. Some of us need our sleep!
