I still maintain everything I said earlier. You guys don't have to like it, but I still think it was a brilliant Spider-Man film with a great theme about how we often lose our ability to think critically when getting swept up in something, whether it be a social movement or what-have-you. That's cool. I more than welcome opposing views here. And don't worry, I will be watching some of my favorite MCU movies in the coming days so there are some very positive reviews coming up!

I don't like those films, and I don't like him as Spider-Man.

Spiderman Far From Home Okay, so fair warning: this is, in my opinion, one of the MCU's worst movies. But, I don't think it's a bad movie. There are some redeeming qualities. The visual presentation of Mysterio is pretty good. That illusion sequence with the snow globe, zombie Iron Man, ECT is damn fun to watch. Mysterio is actually my favorite Spidey villain so seeing him on screen with FISHBOWL and all was a treat. Gyllelynenenllhall was also enjoyable in the role. That said, I think the tone of him is all wrong. In the comics he is pure pulpy B movie sci fi. It's why I like him. This movie gets the images correct, but takes all the fun out of him. Some of it is very clever as an adaptation: the drones, the fake story, but it just isn't satisfying to me at all. And that bar scene monologue? The worst scene in the MCU. I'm not kidding. I agree with everything Salzmank said above on that. Now, as for Peter... They really double down on making Tony the new Uncle Ben. And I'm actually fine with it. It's different, so why not, I guess. There are a few good scenes of Peter struggling with his grief, but sadly the main inner conflict seems to be "Aw schucks! I just wanna enjoy my vacation!" instead. The personal stakes are just too low. Add in the painfully cutesy romances, the excessive humor and the character of Brad and this movie really falls short of the bar set by Homecoming. Like the first movie, the second half is better than the first, but it's just not one of my favorites. Though it is still a fun lighthearted watch. Agree! Except that I’d go further and say that, for me, it’s a flat-out bad movie. The only thing I really liked about it was the illusion sequence, the only moment when the movie seems to understand Mysterio’s character. Totally agreed with the romance and the humor, which I thought were handled well in Homecoming. Also, I found Spidey’s first girlfriend (in Homecoming) much funnier and more likable than the second. Oh, and J.K. Simmons’ hilarious J.J. Jameson is always welcome (even not in Spidey…just put him in anything), but here he just served to remind me of how much better the Raimis were. This beat out Thor and Black Panther for my least favorite MCU entry. BP I mostly just found boring; this I found actively irritating. Should I run away now?

I know I said I was going to not take part in this topic because of old wounds, but it seems the topic of Spider-Man is a good motivator to break abstinence.

Captain Marvel
I was hard on this one when it came out, but for some reason it continues to grow on me. I dont really know how to articulate what it is I like about it, or why my opinion has evolved. I think maybe that after many comic book movies this one initially felt like it was underwhelming. But it does a few clever things: flipping the standard origin story on its head by making her origin the movie's central mystery was a great choice. The Skrull twist was nicely done as well.
I also like how this one really fills in the cosmic world building for the MCU. It's like a more serious companion piece to the GotG movies.
I was disappointed with the directing the first time around too, but it's actually pretty good in an understated sort of way. Not flashy. Not particularly unique. But very competent. Brie is also a good fit in the role of Carol Dancers, though I think the characterization still needs some fine tuning in the sequel.
Overall it's a fun little superhero action movie. Not anything too special, but very enjoyable. Though I still cannot figure out why it's set in the 90s. Seems like they only did that so that it could come out before End Game. I think it would have behooved them to wait until Phase Four.
Also, I gotta say, I HATE that they made Fury's eye into a joke. HATE IT.

I like it very much. It makes a fine origin story and fills in some info to help complete the history of the MCU. 9/10

Captain Marvel had me goihg from 'This is just ok but I like it' to 'Its actually quite good and I love it'.
Disagree on the eye thing. I was actually hoping it was Goose who took his eye.
To me its a 7/10. Middle of the pack MCU movie. Its problem is that its more of a Phase 1 movie. If you put it between the five movies before Avengers 1 its easily one of the best. Yeah, Im not a real fan of the Iron Man movies. I think only The First Avenger is actually better. Which is no crime.

The Wolverine last? Why? I want to love The Wolverine. I really do. As I said above, Act One is great. The director is excellent, a better technical director than most others in the genre. And I love JackMan in the role... But Act two is just so dull to me. The female leads come across as boring teenagers. And Act Three is just filled with dumbness. Part of me thinks it's a better movie than some of the ones I have above it, but it's so much less enjoyable. I considered changing Far From Home to last though. Are you a fan of it? I'd love to hear some defense of it/counter points...

I'd have to rewatch it tbh to get a fresher perspective but I just read your other post about it and the thing with Asians is that they kind of automatically look young for their age. Although I agree she wasnt that interesting and the thing is she's from a privileged, conservative family and the Japs are more conservative in general than the West too. As for the orphan girl, nothing groundbreaking but fine. Not sure if it's the writing or acting in both cases that doesnt work. The only thing I hated about that film was Viper, rest was pretty cool. Why didnt you like the third act?

It's so hard to compare these movies though. How can I decide between Far From Home and The Wolverine? To me they are the worst Marvel movies in my blu ray collection. I like them, but not very much. Far From Home should probably be last if I really think about it... Maybe I should change my list.

Iron Mang
Still holds up as one the MCU's best! Perfect casting. A great script. A director who really understands how to make the character work on screen in every way. Some of the later MCU solo movies could have really learned from this one. Here we have a flawed character who changes considerably over the film. It has real stakes and real conflict! Plus, the humor comes organically from the characters and situations. That warrants repeating: the humor comes organically from the characters and situations. I'm looking at you Iron Man 3! But we will deal with that movie later!
Overall just a terrific superhero movie that still feels fresh, never panders to general audiences, never features broad cutesy humor, provides a tone appropriate for its central character allowing it feel original and become more than just another blockbuster comic book movie. I love it.

(We all had fun at v2.0 about the drama surrounding it, though! ) Now you’ve got me thinking, though…

@shadowbiz You've forced me to reconsider and Wolverine is no longer last! "Last Place for Spider-Man" by Tom PettyHe grew up in an New York town Had a good-lookin' Aunt May who never was around But he grew up tall and he grew up right With them New York girls on them New York nights Well, he moved down here the age of eighteen He blew the girls away, it was more than they'd seen I was introduced and we both started groovin' He said, "I dig you baby, but I got to keep movin' on Keep movin' on" Last Place for Spider-Man, one more time to kill the pain I feel Sandman creepin' in and I'm tired of this town again Well, I don't know, but I've been told You never slow down, you never grow old I'm tired of slinging webs, tired of swinging down Tired of myself, tired of this town Oh, my my, oh, hell yes Honey, put on that party dress Buy me a drink, sing me a song Take me as I come 'cause I can't stay long Last Place for Spider-Man, one more time to kill the pain I feel Sandman creepin' in and I'm tired of this town again There's pigeons down at Times Square He's standin' in Red & Blue underwear Lookin' down from a hotel room The nightfall will be comin' soon Oh, my my, oh, hell yes. You got to put on that party dress It was too cold to cry when I woke up alone I hit my last number, I walked to the road Last Place for Spider-Man, one more time to kill the pain I feel Sandman creepin' in and I'm tired of this town again

Iron Mango 2
Here's a bold statement for you: Iron Man 2 is the most underrated MCU movie of all! That's right. I stand by that. This is the Spiderman 3 of the MCU in that it's messy, falls short of high expectations and features massive studio interference... but, also like Spiderman 3 it's ambitious, has a ton of great material and is just damn fun to watch.

Thor
A decent movie that I've warmed up to a lot as I continue to go back to it. It treats the mythos with seriousness yet also has fun with it. Phase One movies knew how to balance that out just right. We get the Shakesperean drama of Asgard and the fish out of water comedy of Thor on Earth. Loki Lokington is magnificent. Thor gets a solid character arc. Yet, this one never really rises up to the level of Iron Man or even Captain America TFA. It often feels too safe and predictable. Jane is supposed to be a brilliant scientist yet, of course, she spends the entire runtime as a lovestruck idiot who likes Thor only because he has abs. Asgard looks magical and gorgeous, but gets so little development that it ultimately feels superficial. It's a vital piece of the MCU though and I have fun returning to it.

Agreed! I should see it again, but I remember really enjoying it in 2010 ( ten years ago?—wait, what?!). It handled the fallout from the “I-am-Iron-Man revelation” quite well, possibly because Favreau returned as director and knew what he wanted out of the story. Rourke, as far as I can remember, was solid as the baddy and had great presence with all those whips—too bad they didn’t give him more to do. Fun movie.

I can't think about these movies as being ten years old. It's too depressing! Why does time move so much quicker in your twenties and thirties? I remember how long a year felt when I was a kid. I want those long years back!!!!!!@!!!!

The Avengers
Ah the nostalgia. Y'know when this came out I was skeptical but it remains one of my most memorable movie going experiences of all time. I just love this one. You can feel how much passion was put into it. And the attention paid to making the individual characters sound and act like individual characters is admirable. Watching them interact, bicker, form relationships ECT is a joy. It's not just a spectacle of super powers... But then when it is a spectacle of super powers- that's highly enjoyable too. Going back to this movie always puts a big smile on my face.
