So a rag tag group that all winds up dead by the end leading to an epic scene with an established big bad if the universe?

As a Thunderbolts comic book fan, I am honestly unsure what to make of any of this.
Why no Zemo? Why Sentry? Why so many Russians? Who is the field commander of this team? Bucky or Yelana?
As much as I don't want to hear any more spoilers, I am interested in the logic behind these choices.
That said, the trickle of information about this show is becoming annoying - like a slow leak in a bicycle tire.
I'm going to have to blackout/mute when filming starts next month. I hope this one works out.

It’s a mixed bag of feelings because I really like Yelena, Bucky, Red Guardian and John Walker as characters…and I’d even welcome them in a Thinderbolts team….but the lack of ‘quintessential’ Thunderbolts characters has bothered me since the casting announcement. The additions of other characters like Red Hulk and Sentry are also interesting…but at the same time I have to wonder why we’re adding them but not Fixer, Mach or Songbird. It’d be an easier pill to swallow if I saw any OG TBolts involved. And as much as I enjoy the comic versions of Ghost and Taskmaster…the McU versions don’t really resonate any excitement from me. Like I said…mixed bag.

Like I said…mixed bag. You're absolutely right about having an OG T-Bolt on the team, making this an easier pill to swallow. I'm close enough to this IP that it will hurt tremendously if they get it wrong. At least there are some interesting team dynamics at play. Walker and Barnes have a history. Shostakov and Belova still have some things to work out, etc. If the writers pay attention to detail and what came before, this team could have some interesting dynamics.

It's weird there's no metahumans on the force;though maybe Ghost is kind of flirting with that designation.

The story and villain could be run of the mill but if the team itself jumps off the page then the movie will be a win. I feel ya on the fandom tho. When I was reading comics hot and heavy Thunderbolts was one of my main titles. This was around the Norman Osborne era…then I read up til the Red Hulk team and did some backtracking to the origins. It’s an IP with a ton of potential and adaptability.

T-bolts have tons of great arcs; "Like Lightning," "Back on Target," "Acceptable Loses," "Dark Reign," and any books where Hawkeye led the team were all enjoyable. Suicide Squad is the more established IP, but it typically lacks the redemption arc and character development of T-bolts. I hope some of that shows through in the adaptation.

There’s a new report that the name “Thunderbolts” will come from… Yelena’s childhood soccer team The one thing I have always had a love/hate relationship with is the MCU humor. Just embrace the campiness for a change. Enough with the self depreciation. Accept that this genre and its source material are popular. You can stop making fun of yourself out of fear that the audience will do it first.

In Phase One and perhaps into Phase Two, it’d make some sense to help suspend the audience’s disbelief. But it’s been sixteen years now. People can get behind it.

But they only seem to have doubled down on it. Even Whedon didn’t make fun of the Avengers name.

Sentry be like: You're making this too easy. You had no chance against me anyway LOL... To be fair, it makes sense that Bucky would investigate them though

But I’ve reconciled myself to the notion this movie may not accurately represent the Thunderbolts I know and love. I just hope it’s still enjoyable. Florence Pugh is enough reason to go see this one for me.
