Alright my take is Smith took this way too far, transforming the Oscars into a Jerry Springer episode with this IMO exaggerated “must defend her honor” machismo bullshit. It was a sucker punch, meant to embarrass on national television a comedian who’s job it is to be a little edgy. Should comedians have to ask permission now? I didn’t see Joe Pesci trying to knife Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes. Are roasts now going to break out into the the Royal Rumble? This was a ridiculous act by Smith, Rock should treat this as a major victory of his effectiveness, and I hope SNL does a “Roast of Will Smith” sketch this weekend with Rock himself playing a hypersensitive Will

The conspiracy theorist in me thinks the whole thing was staged; however, if it wasn't, Rock is definitely the wronged party in this scenario.
In the video, Smith laughs along with the joke until his wife gives him the side-eye. Then he instantly has some psychotic break. And what kind of dude slaps another man? Not to get into male toxicity territory, but - a slug in the face would have been more becoming.
But then again, Smith is a serial slapper. At least it was a slap issued with conviction.
Even if the jokes are tasteless, public figures are fair game for comedians - it comes with living in a free society.
Besides, has Will Smith ever even seen the first G.I. Jane? Honest, Mrs. Smith would be lucky to score the part.

Smith was definitely wrong here. Everyone has got the right to offend. Everyone has got the right to be offended. But no-one ever has the right to resort to 'violence'.
He should have gone to Rock after the show and tell him the truth. Solve it with dignity and honor. Now he looks like a petty street thug.

Smith was completely in the wrong here.
It's been aggravating to say the least to see half of twitter respond to this praising Smith as someone standing up for his wifes honor and hailing the 'dont start none wont be none' mentality as one of value. This has been propped up as a metaphor for microaggressions against black people and misogynoir (which is something i had to look up). But I don't see this as anything more important than a comedian, on stage, making fun of a celebrity and then that celebritys husband assaulting the comedian. There aren't more layers to this than that for me. The only background to take into consideration here is Smiths mental state because he seemed all over the place emotionally in a very short amount of time and I really think he should see a therapist or something because he's definitely giving the impression publicly of a person a bit off their rocker.
If theres one thing not to take away from this it's that violence is a good solution for hurt feelings. Because if you aren't Will Smith then you'll probably get slapped with an assault charge.

I’m inclined to agree with most posts here… however… as a fellow head shaver surely you must agree that a world where people who mock bald people get smacked is quite appealing. I’d like Will Smith with me the next time I get a Lex Luthor joke.

If I was Chris Rock, I'd find anyway to monetize it.

Thus began the tradition of every oscar winner slapping the host once across the left cheek for good luck.

Is a woman getting a regulation haircut to train to serve her country the sickest burn in the world?
I know the army, navy, etc., now allow non-reg doos, but women training with rangers, special forces, or sapper probably still keep it short. Not to turn this into another conversation… I'm just failing to see the deep offense in the joke. It's not like she has terminal cancer, and he made fun of that.
By Smith's reasoning, Christopher Reeves' wife should have slapped Rock if they were at this year's Oscars (RIP). I guess a wheelchair joke might have afforded her a full-on execution. Reeves had the same condition and began shaving his head bald late in life.
And when examined closely, it kind of looks staged
From my limited time on sets, it looks like Will hit the mark and then pivoted to the camera when executing the slap. Rock also sticks his chin out - rookie mistake in this unforgiving slapping game. Maybe it's their training.
The sad part is that many people of color's accomplishments last night got overshadowed by these antics.

For one, Smiths anger afterward seemed legit. I know he's an actor and can make himself appear emotional but that didn't feel like a fun gag for the audience at home. Also he's cursing so I doubt the Academy would sanction that kind of staged event. But also...this doesn't make anyone look good, including the Academy Awards. Rock is getting heat because of the joke, Smith is getting heat because of the slap, the Academy is getting heat for everything. This is publicity but not the good kind and as you say...it upstages everything else that happened that night. It's the only thing anyone is talking about. Is anyone talking about Ariana Debose or Jessica Chastain or Encanto? No, theyre talking about Smith slapping Rock. This moment turned the awards show into tabloid gold.

I think the idea of taking it away isn’t particularly productive. I mean he already won it. I’m wondering if they ban him from the show for a number of years.

Slapgate
I thought it was staged until I heard Rock's response after the cussing. He got flustered. This is why it is good that I watch Kojak--who knew how important hair or the lack there of would become?
L.A. Reinstitutes Mask Mandate To Protect People From Getting Slapped By Will Smith
LOS ANGELES, CA—Following a dangerous upward trend of getting slapped by Will Smith, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has reinstituted a mask mandate to protect against further occurrences of getting slapped by Will Smith.
“CDC data proves conclusively and without a fiber of doubt that mask mandates offer significant protection from Will Smith, in the event you are near him and say something remotely funny,” said Director of Public Health, Dr. Barbara Ferrer. “However, for the safety of others, we also ask that all citizens practice social distancing of at least one mile from Will Smith.”
When asked if she believed mask mandates would protect against Will Smith in the event someone made reference—humorous or not—about his wife Jada brazenly sleeping with other men in the name of an “open marriage,” Dr. Ferrer referred to data indicating that only harmless jokes about a non-lethal, slightly embarrassing health condition would trigger a Will Smith incident.
The health director then added that, in order to prevent those around him from getting slapped, Will Smith should also wear a mask.

That^ is funnier (and more clever) than anything else relating to this whole debacle that was basically just two desperate attention-seekers ensuring that they are all anyone will talk about in regards to the 2022 Oscars (instead of the folks who, you know, actually deserve attention). And bonus points for that^ photo including three actors I'm a fan of (ie. Andrew Garfield, Jessica Chastain and Jessie Buckley).
