The thing I hate most about the first I Am Legend is that it missed the point of the novel. Spoilers if you haven’t read the novel by Richard Matheson….
But the point of the novel isn’t that Robert Neville is this great vampire hunter (they’re vampires in the novel even if they’re not clearly established as such in the film) or that he’s a c hair away from finding a cure or that humanity will survive despite these monsters. The point is that HE is the monster. Humanity had now evolved into this form of vampirism and they weren’t all brainless bloodsuckers but intelligent beings who had recreated a society around their new situation. Neville is the one who stalks into their bedchamber and slaughters them in their sleep. Their society cannot thrive with Neville around and he realizes that by the end. He realizes that he is their nightmare and he accepts his death so that the world may move on.

What leading man in today's climate would have wanted to be labeled as the monster by the end of that movie? They tried to get us to feel sympathy for the Zombie/Vampires of the Will Smith film by showing they had rudimentary feelings for each other - but Neville never reaches the same level of understanding or self-awareness as his counterpart in the novel.

Tom Hardy? He seems completely unafraid to play the most grotesque or cartoonishly ott roles. Look at Capone where he's a drooling halfwit in a diaper mowing down innocents with a tommy gun.

Will Smith confirmed it's happening and he's working with Michael B. Jordan. The sequel will take place after the alternative ending where he lived.
