Guys, if so many great and talented directors are calling the MCU trash who are we to argue? What if they’re right? I’m deeply concerned.

Guys, if so many great and talented directors are calling the MCU trash who are we to argue? What if they’re right? I’m deeply concerned. Everyone has got the right to an opinion. I think its a good thing the MCU feels like its the same. It is meant to be that way. I wish this recurring theme amongst directors who get labeled as auteurs were solely about opinions. Here is what you can really take away from Villeneuve's "notes" on the MCU… Denis is ready and willing to use a popular franchise and its fans in his proxy war against his actual opponent, the corporate masters who fund both his films and MCU films. His goal, I imagine, is to have the auteur retake control of the studio system (because that worked so well the last time it happened). Rather than take the fight directly to them, he's chosen to ape his geriatric brethren and weaponize us to battle it out with the studios on Twitter for the "soul of cinema." And if you get a little ink along the way for your $165 M indy film, with a WHOLLY unoriginal hot take on the MCU, that's a nice bonus, too. If anything, HIS films are starting to feel a little "copy and paste" to me - visually stunning for sure, but always oblique and somehow poorly paced + needlessly contrived. He's quite gifted as a storyteller, but I haven't felt genuinely satisfied after seeing one of his films in a while now. It's more like, "oh, well, that happened." And by the way, you gotta watch a hell of a lot of MCU films to know they're "copy and paste." I look forward to his Infinity Saga recap. See you on Max, Denis.

I actually think directors like Denis are a part of the problem. I adore Blade Runner 2049 and it’s my favorite sci fi movie since Jurassic Park. But Dune, as much as I want to see it, does look like an indie film with a massive budget and that type of thing never made money in Hollywood. Pick whatever era you like there was no time when a movie like this was going to be a huge hit. It’s a fallacy that one must chose between mass appeal and creative integrity. It’s your job as a filmmaker to find the balance. And to blame superhero movies when you fear that you are about to fail is pathetic.

They aren't highlighting the real problem with movies--and that is a lack of independence and creative passion. Scorsese and V-whatever are not providing that. The first used digital gimmicks for his last one instead of using a younger cast and the latter has done sequels and remakes.
They should be criticizing superhero films for the lack of quality adventure and suspense. They should say "you want to see a good superhero film? The Adventures of Captain Marvel 1941."
It's not constructive criticism. They are plugging their new movies-and the only way they can do it is to criticize superheroes and Disney?

So Denis has a huge (and very expensive) movie coming out next month and he has decided to insult the biggest movie-going audience in the history of movies. Smart.
