Scoop (2006; dir. Woody Allen). This is pretty standard-issue later Allen—fine, funny, but not especially distinguishable or distinguished as Midnight in Paris (2011) and Magic in the Moonlight (2014) are. The plot is basically half- Topper, half- Thin Man, which could work if Allen cared about it; instead, he really just cares about himself and Scarlett Johansson, which I understand but which leaves all the other top-notch actors (Ian McShane, Hugh Jackman, Charles Dance) with nothing to do. As ever, Allen gives himself some good one-liners (“I was born into the Hebrew persuasion, but when I got older I converted to narcissism”), but his script is otherwise all over the place, always seeming as if it’s just about to become clever or inspired but not actually getting there. And the ending is an anticlimactic cop-out. On the other hand, Johansson’s good: I’ve always thought she’s better in comedy, where she’s got a kind of Marilyn-Monroe-in-Some-Like-It-Hot air, than in drama. She’s also particularly attractive here, which certainly doesn’t hurt the proceedings. Overall, though, this is pretty weak tea.

"Dragonslayer", starring peter MacNicol. No idea why anyone thought it was a good idea to cast him as the lead in... well, anything, ever.

It's a cynical 70s cop film disguised as an 80s fantasy film. It puts so much focus on the corruption of those in power in a very 1970s-still-bitter-about-Watergate-and-'Nam kind of way. It was a bizarre meshing of tones, to say the least.
