The Green Knight (2021)
Apart from the weird casting of an Indian actor (the main character) and the random gay angle, it was a pretty solid film. Remember this is based on an Arthurian legend ie old British... Will watch the new Reminiscence or Demonic movie next

Reminiscence (2021)Despite the bad reviews and even worse BO opening, I enjoyed the film quite a bit.
I have to say Im impressed with Lisa Joy's (co-creator of Westworld series/wife of Nolan's brother) film directorial debut. It's just really too bad that the wider world didnt appreciate her efforts as much. Day and date streaming release obviously doesnt help either.
Jackman, Ferguson (she sings too and I believe it's her voice?) and Newton all give great performances. Especially Jackman in experiencing love, confusion, anger, sadness and surprise as he investigates the sudden disappearance of his girlfriend.
The world of the movie was lived-in and realized. The future world is flooded (with water) and buildings are partially submerged. Boats are used to get around at times (kinda like Venice haha). History of war. Why people want to revisit the past. Criminal element and the rich. The time to sleep and the heat.
The script was compelling and surprisingly found myself a bit moved by the end. Aided by good characters. Certainly a timely movie as we're experiencing a semi-apocalyptic environment presently. It is definitely worth checking out

It is definitely worth checking out Thanks for the review, Biz—I wanted to see Werewolves Within and Green Knight and missed both (is it just my area or are movies not sticking around in theaters as long as they used to?), and then I put off seeing this one because of the bad reviews. I’m not that wild about Jackman, but I like Ferguson, Newton, noir, and Phildickian science fiction. I’ll probably take a look at this at some point…maybe just on streaming, though.

A Woman's Secret (1949)
It's a decent movie by a good director (Nicholas Ray) who makes good movies. It's about a woman, Maureen O'Hara, who allegedly shoots her protege, a young attractive woman who's an excellent singer. She sings better than Maureen O'Hara's character used to. The protege threatens to quit while Maureen O'Hara continues the confrontation in the dressing room. We don't see what occurs in the room, only that a single gunshot is fired. After calling a doctor and the police, Maureen O'Hara calmly confesses to shooting the woman.
So that's the setup.
The story is told between flashbacks and the present. The story behind the setup is Maureen O'Hara sings, but loses her voice. She and her sympathetic piano player encounter a young attractive singer. They take her on immediately. The Piano player tells this story to the inspector. Despite the advice of her legal council, she quickly confesses to shooting her protege when she threatened to leave. Maureen O'Hara enthusiastically states her protege has become and extension of her, and that she wasn't "allowed" to quit. The piano player doesn't buy this. He badgers the inspector to listen to his tales of why she could never do this. Eventually, the inspector and his amateur sleuth wife get on board.
What really happened is the protege held the gun, contemplating killing herself. The gun, which Maureen O'Hara had confessed to being gifted by a soldier, was actually a gift to the protege. Maureen O'Hara's secret is she didn't shoot her protege. She walked in wanting to talk, saw the gun, tried to wrestle it from her and it went off.
Maureen O'Hara's plan is crazy. There's more to it, involving the backstory with a soldier, a lawyer, a trip to Paris, and one really stubborn piano player.
It's good.
Repast (1951)
Mikio Naruse film starring Setsuko Hara
I love it. It's dark and kind of a desperate story. It's about a woman, Setsuko Hara, playing a dissatisfied housewife in Osaka who resents her lot in life, an emotion she painstakingly covers up with perfectionism around the house until her husband's runaway niece shows up. It's black and white, ancient and Japanese.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
Fuck yeah! It's endlessly bloody but has a small army of characters that grew on me quickly and the James Gunn touch is appreciated.
Saint Maud (2019)
I liked it! It's fucked up, weird, uncomfortable.
It's an A24 film about a nurse who becomes obsessed with saving the soul of her patient. It's dark, atmospheric, and exactly the type of film I like seeing noticed. It's a small movie that swings wide. IMDb's tag words for it are "drama", "horror", "mystery". They all fit to a degree. I thought the lead actress was really good.
It's the one I recommend the most.

The Suicide Squad (2021)
Fuck yeah!
I liked it. James Gunn remarked on the concept by saying there's an innate tragedy to villains who aren't that good at being villains. It comes through in the film, I think. It's endlessly bloody but has a small army of characters that grew on me quickly and the James Gunn touch is appreciated. Out of curiosity, what did you think of the first one? Did you see it?

It was okay. My favorite part survived to be in two more movies, so I got to keep what I wanted. It took a couple more years for that to matter, though.
It looked really good. I just can't remember, was the mission to stop that guy's sister's demon half from taking over the world?
I gather the villain in any Suicide Squad movie is Amanda Waller. I'd really have to watch it again to remember the plot.

Demonic (2021)
Ive gotten rid of the number ratings as Im not really great at allocating them. I mean it's always a challenge for me to choose the best films of all-time or choices like it. This movie was decent. A solid effort by the District 9 guy. Again bad reviews and worse BO numbers. Oh boy, I feel sorry for the guy. No, Im not a shill or sympathizer for bad films lol. If the trailers look good to me, I will give it a shot. It's hard to juggle science and horror and this is what Blomkamp did. You always risk the reduction of a scare or the creepy factor by doing this. Although it was interesting to see a new approach to dealing with an evil presence via advanced tech and it was chilling in its own way, you will find this in the trailer too. An otherworldly, eerie vibe thats for sure. Did he do this successfully? Ultimately Ill leave that for you to judge but I believe he did. There was one scene that really caught me off guard. Really well done. Even when I was attempting to rationalize that Im just watching a film, it was still, well it scared the bejesus out of me! I will admit that. Definitely watch this movie at night/evening. All Ill say is that involves a trick, without spoiling it You will also see that the experimenters with the simulation are quite thorough in their approach and what it leads to. A very cool angle

Ha that District 9 guy.
He said he didn't want to be known as "the District 9 guy."
I watched
Highway 301 - a 1950 film noir which was recommended on IMDB2 but of course I can't post there because those assholes banned me. Interesting message at the end of this--an actor portraying the police guy says to the audience that society needs to be tough on criminals early in their careers because they are congenital criminals and can't be reformed. That message did not get repeated much.
Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs 1966 - sequel film which is very silly but it had a few laughs. The title song appears at the end for some reason.
