Industry projections place the global weekend tally between $120 and $130 M.
I'm guessing north of $120 but not quite $130 M - pre-sales were strong, outpacing some pre-pandemic MCU titles (including Spider-Man: Far From Home), but there's the Disney+ Premier access to factor in as well.

Why are they putting this on DisneyFlix? Theaters are open.

Why are they putting this on DisneyFlix? Theaters are open. Those who got a house, a giant TV, sound system, a kegerator, and a grill during the pandemic would rather pay $30 to watch it at home. They may keep the split option. It will forever change movie stats, but some forward steps should come from all of this.

I don’t consider any of this a “step forward” but if people want to pay 50% more to watch at home that’s their business. I’ll be watching it in a theater…. Like a boss.

It may seem like 50% more, but I'm paying 1/4 as much for beer, none for gas vs. a 1 hour drive, I'm as comfortable and as clothed as I wish to be, and I can tell anyone talking to shut up without worrying about a parking lot fight. I'm paying far less than you.

The second weekend will tell the tale about premier access. There are way too many high-quality spoiler clips from the movie on the web right now. Apparently, Disney-"loss prevention" is playing a non-stop game of whack-a-mole with bootleggers. Great opening weekend, but the second story drop could hurt more than it should.

Domestic 100.7 million Foreign 100.7 million Worldwide 201.4 million Pretty bad Box Office bleed off. I think I saw 67% drop. I'm struggling to rationalize the why of it unless D+ is seeing record purchases.

I'm struggling to rationalize the why of it unless D+ is seeing record purchases. It's a massive drop that is impossible to fathom even with Disney+ premier access factored in. Space Jam 2, a film with terrible reviews and a day-and-date HBO Max release in theaters, is doing brisk business this weekend. Per my previous comments in this thread, I predicted the drop-off would be steep, but this is a more significant loss than I anticipated. I guessed 60%. I think it's a combination of lackluster interest in the character, piracy (you can watch nearly 30 minutes of the film on YouTube in pristine quality clips). Disney Premier access also makes it easy for people to side-step the theater and stop by a friend's house who already bought it. If this scenario played out during the height of the pandemic, it would have been a disaster. Black Widow has a comfortable margin over WW84 (its nearest contemporary in the genre), but this does not bode well for future female lead superhero films from Marvel... or anyone else.

I agree, but couldn't bring myself to press the like button. The fact that the character is dead may have hurt the interest level, plus it's delay. I'm curious what people's reasoning will have been when it's all washed out. Are theaters fully open nationally? D+ released some pretty solid numbers on opening week (considering there isn't much history to measure numbers against in that arena) but I do wonder about the bleed-off to multiple viewer sales. I know my cousin rode on my purchase. If everybody takes away an extra viewer, that builds up.

I know my cousin rode on my purchase. If everybody takes away an extra viewer, that builds up. It's easy to see the flaws in Disney's strategy with the benefit of hindsight. I have five friends/family living the life on my Disney+ account. I was shocked to find they all got access to Black Widow once I unlocked it. On the flip side, Disney+ gained a new subscriber because that same feature/bug incentivized one of my moochers to get a separate account (likely to start his own Disney Premeir Access scalping ring). Disney was well aware that this would happen, or at the very least, they strongly suspected it. They were hyper-aggressive last week about touting BW's outing - even going so far as to put out a press release. That's unprecedented. It's certainly not the end of the franchise, but it likely is the end of Black Widow. The Marvel's will determine if we get any more stand-alone female-led genre pictures from Marvel.

In a few days they'll have my money too. Theaters will be so packed that I don't mind Black Widow being on Disney +. I'm hoping it splits the difference so I don't have to compete for a seat.

Uh, Yeah, we'll likely never see another Marvel movie launch day and date on Disney+ ever again. This is likely the biggest reason for the earth-shattering drop. There's absolutely no point in releasing the film in China at all. They already have it. ‘Black Widow’s’ China Delay Rings Alarm Bells for Hollywood

Great point about the home access drawing money from the future video on demand while preventing the theater revenue. It would seem the model doesn't work not only for theaters, but also for overall stakeholders in general. Given the convenience and reduced overhead of home viewing, I'm sure they would have wanted to eventually withdraw from theaters entirely, but clearly the financials don't match that ambition at this time. deadline.com/2021/07/black-widow-disney-day-and-date-strategy-theatre-owners-protest-1234795420/

Guys...I'm worried about the MCU...
I think it's time to reboot it....
Preferably with Robert Pattinson...

Although TBH I see no real reason not to just stick with the theater release and eventual home release we’ve always had. You have to have that need to go to the theater or else they’re going to slow suffocate that side of the industry.
