What it needs, honestly, is a new director.

What it needs, honestly, is a new director. No, what it needs is a studio that doesn't make it's director bog it down with tie-ins to a larger universe. James Wan is a great director, but anyone working on DC films right now is doing so under bad conditions.

I don't know much about Wan as I have not seen his other films. But he was all style and no substance here. The script was already bad, but he made it worse. He was like a more colorful, less dour Zack Snyder.

Hopefully they structure the film better.

What's the latest with Amber Heard? Any chance she gets the boot?

He was like a more colorful, less dour Zack Snyder. Black Manta still being alive? Orm still being alive? All the leftover xenophobia among the other Atlantians? Mera's father heavily implied to have been wanting the war? The Trench monsters and it's spinoff? They basically crammed in as much possible spin-off and sequel-bait as possible to build a mini-universe around Aquaman. No, the film he was told to make by WB was all style and no substance. Wan did NOT make it worse. If anything, he made the best possible movie out of what was being required of him by the studio. He's nothing like Zack Snyder. It doesn't matter how many directors they piss through, the sequels will NOT improve on the first one as long as WB is the one calling the shots. It's the STUDIO that needs to change.

You already know the difference, so I have no idea why you're pretending you don't. Marvel doesn't bog it's directors down. They work with them. Their directors know ahead of time what they're being brought on-board for and are given plenty of creative freedom as long as it still aligns with the bigger picture. Example: "Thor Ragnarok" only required Odin to die, and Asgard to be blown to pieces by the end. Waititi was obviously given a lot of room to play around with that premise otherwise, only being required that a mention of Thor's search for whoever was trying to collect the stones (which he got out of the way in the very first scene, freeing up the whole rest of the movie), and that Loki steal the Tesseract, summoning Thanos to them at the end. Those are the grand total bullet points he was likely required to meet. I don't know who was responsible for bringing Doctor Strange and Hulk into the movie, but it didn't distract from the film the way WB's "bigger picture" tie-ins do. Meanwhile, in "Aquaman," the movie had to hit the pause button every few minutes to set up one of its future sequels or setup a spinoff. There was no flow to that movie and you could tell it was riddled with studio bullet points. So there you go.

Well, here's hoping his character in the movie doesn't make me want to stab the screen like his character of Euron Urine Greyjoy in Game of Thrones did. So, is Amber Heard definitely still in the sequel or has there been talk of recasting her, given everything that's gone on?

It's good that Amber Heard is still in this regardless of how we feel about the situation with Johnny Depp

"Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom casts actors to play Karshon, King Atlan, and a new character, with Randall Park also returning as Dr. Shin."

I really liked it too. It’s a blast. However, I’d probably rank the upcoming films in order of anticipation like this:
The Batman
Black Adam
Aquaman
Shazam
The Flash
…no interest in the dumb Super-pets movie.
