I have had this on my DVR for months but am thinking of deleting it. Everybody says how great it is but they also talk about how dark and a big downer it is. Don't get me wrong, I don't need movies to be all sunshine and rainbows, but I'm not into stuff that brings me down either.

I liked it but if it's gotta go, it's gotta go. Nothing can be on my DVR that long and not get watched. It's a sign.

Watch it, mang, its fantastic. I am torn I'd honestly watch it if I were you. Otherwise you'll never know. Doo doo doo do.
I agree with both of the above. I thought Joker was fantastic but Heath Ledger's Joker is still better.

Just know going into it, it is a very serious film, he murders people, so watch it on a night you feel like watch a crime film, and not a comedy.

Its an ok movie with a fantastic performance by Phoenix. But it has nothing to do with the DC character.

It's not a comic book movie It's not a superhero movie It's not a super villain movie It sure as heck is not a Batman movie It's not a Joker movie.
So if you just want to watch a drama, that lifts a lot of plot points from "The King of Comedy" and "Taxi Driver", and sticks in some names of comic book characters then you might enjoy it.

Of course it is.
Any movie with bruce wayne, martha wayne, thomas wayne, alfred pennyworth AND Joker in it counts as a comic book movie.
Joker has had many names and origins, this is just another one.
By your logic, I could claim that Rogue One not a STAR WARS movie, it's just a heist film, with a few STAR WARS charcters names in it.

No. Adding those names is nothing but a cynical attempt to get comic book fans to see a movie that has no resemblance to any successful DC comic book universe. Nor can it serve as the basis of a new DC comic book universe. Unless you think Arthur Fleck, who will be in his late 60's by the time Batman exists and can barely tie his own shoes is somehow going to present a challenge for the world's greatest detective.
Your Star Wars analogy doesn't work either. Rogue One was a story about different characters set in the existing Star Wars Universe and it stuck to the canon, the tone, and the look of that existing universe. If Rogue One turned the blasters into six-shooters and dressed the Storm Troopers like 20th century human soldiers, and turned Princess Leia into a political hack A--hole like they did to Thomas Wayne, THEN it would be like "Joker".

Jayman , I think you should watch the movie and decide for yourself. I am firmly in the camp that it is not a comic book movie (for reasons that taylorfirst1 has already expertly articulated). While I don't consider it to be a comic book movie, I've always held that it is still an exceptional crime drama and period piece. I've since softened on that stance because of how much the film owes to its homages. There is just nothing particularly original about Joker if you are familiar with the movies of the American "New Hollywood" movement of the late 60 and 70s. Younger audiences who seem bowled over by the violence, grittiness, tense atmosphere, and existential terror of Joker are more prone to say it's a masterpiece because they're not familiar with the film's precursors. I invite them all to get a Criterion Collection subscription. That said, stylistically, the film exceeds, and the premise is novel if not entirely original. It's the equivalent of putting a hotdog into a halved twinkie. It's a curiosity you experiment with, and afterwards, you move on. The acting in the film is also very high-quality, in my opinion.

Some thoughts.
I definitely think Joker is a comic book movie. It's about the Joker in Gotham City. It doesn't bother me if it's not canon or authentic because those aren't the only bars. Authenticity is as good as the subject material. People treat it like a requirement but it's more like a guide. It doesn't have to be followed. The Joker's been around since the 40's. Not only is it inevitable that he'll change, he already has multiple times.
It's not that I don't understand where people are coming from when they say it's not a comic book movie. It's just that I think what constitutes a comic book movie hasn't finished being defined. It never will as long as people keep adding to it. What are the rules? Are there rules?
I also think it works best as a one-shot graphic novella come to life. It doesn't need tie-ins or sequels; in fact I think it would suffer for it.
