If their plan is basically, "Well, Margot, if Johnny Depp loses his court case...then welcome aboard! If he wins...then we're sorry, but we won't be needing you after all.", I would hope that she would tell them to go to hell.

Yeah, I was sure I'd read somewhere that Depp said he wouldn't return to Disney even if they offered him some exorbitant amount. Good news for Margot, though.

A sixth movie is still happening. One of the original writers is coming back. No word on Johnny Depp yet.

So the reboot movie they were talking about doing with Margot Robbie has been canceled. That's disappointing. It may have been good.

According to Bruckheimer, the current project was written simultaneously as the female-led one. However, they’ve decided the best move was to move forward with the current movie under production. That doesn’t mean the female-led Pirates of the Caribbean is locked forever in Davy Jones' chest, as it could definitely be reworked in the future. As Bruckheimer told us: “I think that that script will come forward at a certain point. We developed two different stories for Pirates and the other one’s going forward first, so that’s what we’re working on, to try to get that one made.”

More from Bruckheimer:
Now we have producer Jerry Bruckheimer making very public signals at The Oscars that the gates are open for Depp's return to the franchise. Bruckheimer went as far as to tell ET's reporters that when it comes to Depp and Pirates of the Caribbean "We'll see. I would love it. I would love him in the movie. That's all I can tell you."
....
Jerry Bruckheimer dropped some additional smoke signals when he let it be known that things with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise are indeed progressing now: "We're all working on it. We'll see how it comes out. But we're very excited. I think we'll have a great screenplay. And we're getting close."

Now, in a recent interview with LA Times, Mazin teases his Pirates of the Caribbean 6 story with co-writer Ted Elliot, the screenwriter who penned the original movie and two sequels. While work on the project has been paused due to the ongoing WGA strike, Mazin teases that his pitch for the film is quite different from what's come before. Check out his comment below: “We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did! And then he wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.”

"Disney is reportedly considering actress Ayo Edebiri for the leading role in “Pirates 6,” a film that would feature her as a replacement for Johnny Depp’s iconic character, Captain Jack Sparrow, in the “Pirates Of The Caribbean” franchise. Ms. Edebiri, fresh off of her Emmy and Golden Globe-winning role in “The Bear,” is being considered for the role of Anne, purportedly based on the historical figure Anne Bonny, a 17th-century female pirate, according to a post on X.
The news sparked discontent among some fans of the franchise. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, expressed his dissatisfaction with Disney’s decision by retweeting the post with the comment “Disney sucks.”
Critics of the potential casting pointed out discrepancies between the historical portrayal of Anne Bonny as a pale-skinned, red-haired Irish woman and Ms. Edebiri’s Nigerian heritage. Some accused Disney of “blackwashing” historical characters of Caucasian descent.
Others echoed similar sentiments, expressing disappointment over the casting choice and citing concerns about historical accuracy. One X user criticized Disney’s casting decisions, labeling it the “Wakanda policy” and questioning their portrayal of black characters in historical roles."

",,,,They were responding to a post by an account called 'Unlimited L's' which also suggested that Edebiri's character could be based on the 18th century pirate Anne Bonny - one of the most famous female pirates ever."
So a gadfly makes the allegation on 'X' that it's "possible" and everyone runs with it. Yeah, sounds like 2024.
