HBO’s planned TV series adaptation of Naughty Dog’s acclaimed video game “The Last of Us” has cast its female lead.
17-year-old Bella Ramsey, best known for her breakout role as the fierce Lyanna Mormont in “Game of Thrones,” will take on the role of Ellie.
The story is set two decades after modern civilization has been destroyed and centers on the relationship between Joel, a hardened survivor and smuggler in this new world, and Ellie, a teenager who may be key to a cure for a deadly pandemic.
What starts as a small job to take the girl out of an oppressive quarantine zone becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey as they traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.
Fellow “Thrones” actress Maisie Williams was floated years ago as a potential Ellie, though at 23 has gone beyond playing a believable early-mid teen.
Former “True Detective” star and Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali was rumored to be up for a role and whilst he did circle one, a deal never came to fruition and he will not be involved.
“Chernobyl” creator Craig Mazin is writing and executive producing with the game’s original writer and creative director Neil Druckmann.
Russian filmmaker Kantemir Balagov (“Beanpole”) has been tapped to direct the pilot. The game has sold more than 17 million copies across both its original release and remains one of the most critically heralded of all time.

Mere hours after the announcement of Bella Ramsey in the female lead role of Ellie, it has been announced that “The Mandalorian” and “Game of Thrones” actor Pedro Pascal is set to play the male lead role of Joel in HBO’s TV series adaptation of the award-winning PlayStation video game “The Last of Us”.
The story is set two decades after modern civilization has been destroyed and centers on the relationship between Joel (Pascal), a hardened survivor and smuggler in this new world, and Ellie (Ramsey), a teenager who may be key to a cure for a deadly pandemic.
What starts as a small job to take the girl out of an oppressive quarantine zone becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey as they traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.
Pascal is expected to continue on “The Mandalorian” where he is used sparingly because of the nature of his character who remains masked most of the time.
“Chernobyl” creator Craig Mazin is writing and executive producing with the game’s original writer and creative director Neil Druckmann. Russian filmmaker Kantemir Balagov (“Beanpole”) has been tapped to direct the pilot.

They shouldve casted the main guy from hell on wheels I believe he's off being Captain of a Starship now. Originally, I thought Spock-with-a-beard was weird...but now I can't get used to beardless Spock.

HBO is reportedly planning to start production on July 5th on the live-action series adaptation of Naughty Dog’s acclaimed video game series “The Last of Us”.
Shooting will kick off in Calgary, Alberta and production is expected to be wrapped by next year – specifically June 8th 2022. That suggests the series won’t premiere until the last quarter of 2022 at the earliest, and quite possibly 2023.
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are taking on the leading roles of Joel and Ellie, respectively, in the series with the first adaptation to be a direct adaptation of the first game which is regularly considered one of the greatest video games ever made.
The story follows the hardened survivors – an older man and a young girl – on their journey through a radically transformed world twenty years after an infectious fungal pandemic ravaged the course of humanity.
Kantermir Balagov (“Beanpole”) is attached to direct the pilot episode while “Chernobyl” producers Craig Mazin and Johan Renck will executive produce.

“It’s not going to air in 2022, they are still shooting in Canada. I imagine you will see it in 23. I have seen some early episodes and I’m very excited. Craig [Mazin] did Chernobyl for us, he is a fantastic writer and director. What I’ve seen looks amazing so I’m excited for it but it will not be in 22.”

I loved this game. Haven’t played the sequel yet but I think this has a good shot to be a top tier post apocalypse entry. May render the walking dead mute even lol

Lamar Johnson (“The Hate U Give”) and Keivonn Woodard have scored the roles of brothers Henry and Sam in the upcoming “The Last of Us” TV series for HBO.
In the game, the brothers are two survivors that Joel and Ellie meet in their journey and in the series, they are portrayed as “brothers in Kansas City hiding from a revolutionary movement seeking vengeance.”
Graham Greene and Elaine Miles have also been cast in guest-starring roles as a married couple surviving alone in the wilderness of post-apocalyptic Wyoming.
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey play Joel and Ellie, respectively, in this adaptation of the celebrated Naughty Dog game.

Bella Ramsey:
“After my first audition, they asked me, ‘have you played it?’ And I said ‘nope,’ and they said, ‘keep it that way’. I did watch some of the gameplay on YouTube just to get a sense of it. But I’m so excited for it to come out – it was such a big part of my life. I shot for a whole year, which is quite a long time when you’ve only lived for 19 years.”

“Comfortably the best adaptation of a video game ever made: one that deepens the game’s dystopian lore while staying true to its emotional core. Like the game, it’s a masterpiece, too. 5/5” – John Nungent, Empire
“For fans of the game, it is an adaptation of the utmost skill and reverence, yet one still capable of surprise; for people who have never picked up a controller, it is an encapsulation of the game’s heart and soul – its full-blooded characters, its neat plotting, its mature themes of love and loss. 4/5” – Stephen Kelly, BBC
“The show expertly tugs on both the heartstrings and the nerves to create something that feels very binge-able. For thriller fans, it’s going to be catnip: more please.” – Vicky Jessop, London Evening Standard
“From the performances to the storytelling to the aesthetic elements, it’s an exquisitely made adaptation. But it also asks viewers to absorb a whole lot of human misery without saying much that we haven’t already heard in similar shows.” – Judy Berman, TIME
“The Last of Us becomes at least as engrossing in its quiet moments as in its scary ones — and arguably more so when it’s just focusing on who these people are rather than the dangers they are running from.” – Alan Sepinwall, Rolling Stone
“What works about ‘The Last of Us’ works well enough that one sees the near future in which the show winds up among television’s best. The raw material, including a poignant and thoughtful curiosity about what it might be like to live through catastrophe, is there.” – Daniel D’Addario, Variety
“The Last of Us series does not feel like a revolution of any kind – it is simply well-made television that elevates itself slightly above some of its genre peers” – Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair
