The beach scene where team one gets eliminated was pretty wild. Some brutal deaths, especially Captain Boomerang. Honestly, it had me wondering why this movie had to be so gory. I mean, I’m all for movies like Logan and Joker, but this movie has a talking shark and a giant star fish (both of which were highlights, so I’m not knocking that). Did it really need to compete to be the most violent comic book movie ever? It certainly would’ve had a broader appeal if it didn’t and probably would’ve made a lot more money as a result.

Does anyone think Captain Boomerangs boomerang lighting up white after his death is a reference to the Brightest Day storyline...wherein Captain Boomerang, along with several other characters, are brought back to life?

If what Gunn said about him having full control of the film, I think that was indeed the goal. Granted this film was written around the time that James Gunn got fired by Disney. This movie could have been his way of venting his frustration over it.

This movie could have been his way of venting his frustration over it. I know it’s an unpopular opinion but I think this movie would’ve been better with a PG-13 rating. Gunn has some real strengths but I think his weaknesses really overwhelmed this movie and most of them came from him deliberately over indulging in vulgarity, pitch black dark humor and violence- Not that those three things aren’t appropriate for this title- they are -but Gunn dialing all three to 11 was far too extreme.

Where’s my boy, Archie Stimpton? He’s usually champing at the bit to attack DC movies. But here’s a DC movie and he’s not here champing! What gives ArArArchStanton ? Here’s a bit. Champ! Champ! Champ!

That doesn’t surprise me. I’m glad it sounds like things worked out for Idris Elba, but it does seem like Joe Manganiello really has gotten the shaft.

Having rewatched last night, Boomeranga glow is there well before he dies so probably not a reference. But still cool looking.

Also upon a second viewing…
Didn’t realize King Shark was wiping tears away in the back of the van while the others were inside drinking and having a good time. Between that and all the reprimands he gets from the rest of the team…I really wish they’d have given him a better ‘family’ moment. He still felt shunned going into the climax by everyone except Ratcatcher 2. I want him to feel loved. 😣

Second viewing at a theater with a friend resulted in gut-busting laughter, and I noticed that the CGI in this movie is also immaculate. No corners were cut. Some of the visuals are genuinely amazing to look at. Some are so simple tho too...but i can watch the super white rain soaked fight sequence all day because of the uniqueness and visual style it gives off. I can just hear John Hammond going 'We spared no expense.' the entire time.

The film is filled with thuds, thumps, splats, squishes and other gag-reflex inducing noises.

It was the impressive kind

But I agree on the technical aspects. King Shark and Starro look far better than they did in the trailers. It may get a nod for Best Visual Effects.
